Nursing industry desperate to find new hires?

There's a Newsweek article recently posted that asserts employers are desperate to find new nurse hires.

Does that sound representative of employers in your region? A number of areas in Florida, for instance, are supposed to be laying off nurses. Moreover, many hospitals across the country are supposed to be in trouble and considering heavy layoffs, which are likely to include nurses. I've also heard rumblings that hospitals are drastically reducing overtime.

Heard anything to support or refute the article?

Most of the jobs I see here in CHattanooga are for RN's......I have heard rumors that two of our major hospitals here are on a hiring freeze..dont know the validity of that though so dont quote me...but there are alot of "Temp" services advertising also.

Well, I know that here I really want to leave where I am at, but I cant find a decent job anywhere, so I am stuck for now.

I was kind of taken aback by that article as well. I have seen , in my area, that there nursing positions open, but, not exactly all the lucrative offers to go along with it. As in the past, there is a nursing shortage overall, but, with the economy, the"perks or extras" sure don't seem to be there. Hospitals around here are not so free to entice to nurses, nor do extras for the nurses they already have.Maybe I am living in the wrong area, so more stories from other nurses would be great to hear.

Trumpster.........I work with some nurses from Chattanooga and Cleveland TN (2).   They told me <this could be rumor, so no straight facts>  Memorial and Erlanger had 'a sort of a hiring freeze'.  When I asked WTH that is, they said that although there are some departments who are not fully staffed, they are only hiring critical care RN's right now.......icu, ccu, and ED.   Plus the only shifts they are offering to experienced critical care RN's are 7p-7a.   Honestly, I prefer 7p-7a in the hospital..........the md's are less anoying on nights.

We only have one heart, take care of it!

There is a hiring freeze currently at my job. People have resigned and haven't been replaced. The only people they have brought in lately have been agency nurses but not since the last 3 people resigned since before the holidays.

The three Major Hospitals in our area just did a bunch of layoffs. 60 people, one layed off 110. Don't know how many were nurses though. Heck even the DMV laid off 25 people. As if the  lines weren't long enough!
