Ok. I'm a 35 yr old mother of 3 daughters. I actually work as a Medical asst. for a major infertility center in NJ. The MA is like a scrub nurse there. I assist with all the medical procedures. I LOVE NURSING!!! Always have. I love taking care of my patients and putting their fears at ease. Here is my dilemma :

I would love to back to school to become an RN and hopefully work in an OR in a Hospital setting. I gonna be frank I SUCK at math! I HATE algebra!!! My confidence is weak to say the least. I know I'm not stupid however, I know from friends that nursing school is HARD! I feel like I would have to study 24/7 in order to even stay alive in a RN program! Not to mention I have 3 KIDS and a full time job! Ehh so torn! I really enjoy this field and don't see myself in any other field.

I don't know.....I'm just worried I don't have what it takes to get through school. LOVE the job not the road to get there!!

So? You suck at math. Start out with taking only one class. Take the lowest math class you can take and work your way up. One class at a time. Yeah, it takes longer but so what? You have the desire and the drive.  You can do it. I REALLY SUCK at math. I started just like I am telling you to do. In September, I start a doctorate program.

p.s. Most of the schools have math labs and tutors to help. Bet your kids and thier teachers would help you as well

I was afraid of failure, too. I received a grant for the L.P.N. program, and really felt under the gun to succeed. Nursing school was the hardest thing I've ever done. You have a huge plus on your side, that you have worked as a MA. You just need to fill in the gaps. You have the heart and desire, everything else can be learned. If I did it, anybody can do it.

Best of luck to you! We can't all look like Pamela like cdnurse, but we can still be good nurses

*love ya Ginny*

God bless and take care

Tracy..........I really suck at math.  They have the classes that prep you for algebra and all that stuff.  There isnt college credit for it but it would give you a foundation for math and up your self confidence!

CD, congrats on the phd program!  What a fabulous accomplishment!

We only have one heart, take care of it!

Math really isn't that hard once you get into it and know the principles. As cdnurse said, most schools do have math labs and tutors. I supplemented my income going to nursing school tutoring mathand anatomy. I neveronce had a student I tutored fail a math exam. You can do it and please do not let your fear of math keep you from a wonderful profession as nursing

Math really does SUCK!!!!I'm studying for my BA, and having a ball in my chemical principles class.  When U get to the Chemistry part, don't try to make sense of it, just remember the formulas, you'll be glad U did.

Have you ever heard the saying?.......  It is better to try and fail than not try and succeed?  If you don't at least TRY for your RN you will never know if you could be one.  You have NOTHING to lose.  Go for it.  You sound like a smart girl.  Don't ever give up on your dreams.  Who cares if you suck at math.  You can learn slowly.  Get a study group or get a tutor.  If you want it bad enough, you'll figure out a way!  I'm rooting for you all the way baby!!!

I wish you the best of luck.  Don't give up!  I'm going to be starting a LPN program in the fall and was diagnosed being learning disabled in math when I was seven years old.  It will be a challenge, but there are tutors available and I believe I can get through it even though it will not be easy for me.  If you have the will and determination you can get through it.  Best of luck to you!

If you really want to become an RN then go for it.  It's hard work and and yes it is always possible yu may fail a course but you just take it again and get it right the second time.  There is only failure if you quit.  Just heard that from a friend and it makes sense.  I have failed but never quit so I WILL be a winner.  Good Luck to you.  You can do it.

I suck at math too! My worst subject. I just got accepted into an LPN school in Nj and my biggest fear was the math section of the test. Never underestimate yourself. I was shocked when I got the letter saying that based on my scores, I would be considered being accepted! I did MA school about 2 years ago and then worked in Pediatrics. That was when I decided to go back to school for nursing. If nursing is your dream then definitely pursue it! I've always had an interest in the medical field. I know it's going to be ALOT of hard work but I'm very passionate and determined. I believe if you feel that strongly about nursing that you can do it. Never give up!
