I hope they don't. I will be a new nurse even though I am 35 years old. There are students way younger than me. Maybe they will get ate first =)

Actually nurses flat out eat each other.  They don't care if you're young or older, new or seasoned.  I've had it happen to me several times and I have never done it to anyone.

I have heard this from other new nurses.

I am a proud mother of three beautyful daughter. I currently live in Los Angeles California. I've worked as a heathecare provider for almost 10 years. I am curently in school to pursue my MSN in nursing, and wants to work as a pediactric nurse, in public health.

I told my boyfriend, nursing is like football, you have to go in there with your defenses up, and game face on, if not, you will get tackled, and maybe foul out of the game.

It happened to me as a new grad. After a particularly tough night on a cardiac unit I had finally finished all the charting and one of the seasoned float nurses said to me " Didn't you know that Nursing is the only profession that eat their young", This was now 1 am after a 3-11 shift.........I was blown away.

I'm a seasoned nurse and feel even intimidated by the new grads in my new emloyee orientation.  !   We have new grads with their BSN, havent even taken the nclex........geez, they are brilliant!   They have obviously been given a top notch education in their nursing program.  I would bet $100 <im a cheapskate so this is a huge bet, at the blackjack tables, I stick to the $5 table> this group passes with the 75 minimum questions.  Wow, this isnt like me.......I'm not being mean or defensive......I'm thrilled to have this gang of new grads at my facility!

You got that right.  Why do some nurses do that?  I have never done that and never will.  I started working with a nurse I finished school with and she acted like she was better than I was because she had been there longer.  It's just not right.

Oh, this has for sure happened to me before, in my first year of nursing school- I was eaten on!

But I've learned how to turn in around and I'm not going to put up with any BS like that anymore! I am human and I need dignity.

Obviously this is an ongoing problem...........we need the golden rule thingy going on.  With the economy being horrible, I sure cant afford to be unemployed.   I always have said, and I stick by this saying " if I'm gonna get fired, its gonna be over something good, not something stupid".  My other saying is that 'it takes alot of money to look this cheap".  I am not going to get fired for being a jerk or mean.  What goes around does come around..........the person we might not like much one day might be the nurse saving your or your loved ones life.  Show respect to your coworkers.

Maybe they are HA, but it certainly is not a pleasant situation to be in.  I've seen these kind of nurses ruin other peoples careers and they think nothing of it.

Deb, your right...............those nurses who eat their coworkers work in packs.........like wolves or jackals......something like that.  My advice to new grads would be 'avoid the crowded areas where the hags sit around the coffee pot talking about 'her hair', or 'did you see the hickey on Zelda's neck?, OOooh, she gonna get terminated because of that.   Do NOT involve yourself in the henhouse.........dont get dragged into petty picking.  I was in a facility where they <evil hens> fancified one of the new grads bumping uglies with a radiology tech in a patient room<it was vacant>.  It wasnt true, at all..............she was a sweet young girl in her mid 20's, a newlywed..........she came to me crying about the false rumor about that situation..........I told her she might need to set things straight with the ones spreading it, or if too scared, go to our supervisor.  Stuff like that is a firing offense.

Nurses are a strange sorority.....I've worked in facilities where if you were not in the "click" then you were treated like dirt and it was constantly put in your face that you could be let go. I have seen a case where a nurse who did not like another nurse, altered a controlled substance so the count would not come out right to get her into trouble. The problem is that the state had to be called to investigate....this lady could have lost her license just because somebody didn't like her. In another case, one nurse was upset with another nurse over a man, who was a policeman, so she started a really nasty rumor about her that caused her to be fired. Older nurses can be intimidated by young nurses, and nurses that have degrees are disliked by nurses that don't.....it's crazy! But one thing still holds true.....you never know who might end up saving you or your love ones' life one day, so we should all try to get along.

I couldn't agree more with this. Lateral violence is a real problem in nursing and the medical field in general.

i've heard some horror stories about the siimilar situation, wherein some nurses are being mean to newly hired nurses or just plain mean to others. made me think  that they  have forgotten the time when they first started as a nurse, when they were so new and anxious and needed support from their co-workers.  good nurses don't eat their young, instead, they support them to be a better nurse, and lift their spirit when needs arises...

I am a second courser and was a new nurse at my unit. The nurses practiced 'seniority' and were extremely negative and rude. Because I am a Dentist and we treat our colleagues with utmost respect, I can say that comparatively, nurses are among the unprofessionals of  professionals.

Just imagine you being a CNA working with these unprofessionals, I tell you, I was not impressed when I saw the true faces under nursing, I think some nurses learn how to eat their young, by their nursing professors in school. I was eat by one, hell, the who entire CNA class was ate by a LVN/RN nursing instructor. How dare she say that we didn't deserve to graduate with the whole entire nursing department, anyone who completes any type of schooling, should be able to have a graduation ceremony, we deserved to have our accomplishments celebrated with  friends, classmates, and families.

My sister in law's a nurse. She said during Nursing school, many nurses were tought on them. It prepares you for the real world. As long as it is not abuse of course.

I've experienced this stuff since nursing school, even from some of my professors.  Most of them were kind enough to warn me that I might be a victim of "hazing" as a new nurse; one of them even said the fact that I am calm and confident (but not cocky) would work against me.

Although I've been a nurse for 3 1/2 yrs, I get crap from a lot of nurses who have been in the field longer, sometimes not much longer but definitely older.  It's frustrating to have to prove yourself over and over again to people who seem to hate you for any number of reasons.  I'm not a huge fan of jumping through hoops, especially when they are aflame and with puddles of pig crap in between them.

This is true for some but not for others. A lot of these veteran nurses have an exterior that is hard for us newbies to read. Don't judge a book!  For each nurse that has been "evil" toward me, I have had another who has gone out of her way to groom me for my profession. There have been "unfriendly" older nurses that are very quietly writing my notes as I sit and cry b/c I'm so exhausted and overwhelmed.  I had one lady who scared me to death call my DON and told her to get off my back. I was shocked as I heard her tell our boss that I was overwhelmed and for good reason etc. These woman are my heroes b/c they don't take anyone's nonsense and they have earned it! So what if they get sour sometimes, don't we all have our moments? We feel like we deserve a chance b/c we are new. Try giving them a chance and respect them for their service and experience. Humility goes a long way with these women (sorry guys...still a female dominated profession). RESPECT. Think military, and know your place.

I heard this all through nursing school and was prepared for it .But I do not understand AT ALL  why people in the same profession can be so crappy to each other. It doesn't make anyone learn better, nor does it make us a better nurse. To say "Well, that's the way I was treated" or "It's always been like that" is completely unacceptable. There is no valid excuse for this pathetic behavior. Other people do take their cues on how to treat us by how we treat each other. Do you think physicians will be more apt to treat us well if they see us treating each other badly? As we make strides to advance our profession and be seen as professionals, it makes it difficult for us to be considered professionals when we behave this way. I have great respect for older, more experienced nurses and look forward to learing a great deal from them, but Do Not, for one second, think that I'm willing to take their crap just because they're stressed or are overworked. We all are stressed and over worked, but all we have for support, who really relate and understand, is each other. I've seen units where nurses don't  work together, and I've seen units where they do work together, and the teamwork concept is far better. (Not sorry- military background) We don't have to be best buds outside of work, but check your attitudes and crappy behavior  at the door. Bottom line- Treat others as you want to be treated. Be Nice!!

You betcha!

I'm 16 years in and still being   lunched upon.  Sometimes I get so nervous and distracted I can't get out of my own way.

Who's got advice on how to deal with this?  I'm just trying to a good job!  Sometimes I feel like if I just sit back and slob it won't be so bad, but that's just not who I am.  I'm a team player... is that why?

I just started in my nursing program last week and after reading all this am wondering if I picked the wrong field.   I spent a few years in the military and you know going in that you will have a rough time for a while, but it all got better once you were out of basic training.  Sounds like nursing is worse than the military basic training abuse.  This is all concerning because I got hired on as a part time employee at the hospital I would like to spend the rest of my clinical career at.   I'd hate to think that another nurse could put my job and career in jeopardy so easily.  I'm wondering if maybe I should just stay in the bar business - at least the creeps there have an excuse - and when the alcohol wears off they often don't even  remember being a butt.  I was totally unaware of the catty behavior that sounds like it's an accepted norm.
