This happened to a fellow co-worker of mine. Sometimes we find important lessons in the humorous experiences at work. ;)

Setting: ICU

The patient is in her 80's, conscious, coherent.. in the ICU for, as the area suggests, intensive monitoring.

It so happened that nebulization was ordered by the resident on duty. I think this was some time in the late evening. So, the nurse comes back with a neb kit. Sets it up, and informs the patient that they would be starting the nebulization. So she then puts the mask in place, and switches on the nebulizer. Seeing, the "smoke", the patient's eyes bulge and she screams, "Fire!!! Fire!"
Poor old lady...

To the most uncommon to the most common procedures.. hehehe.. always always elaborate.. ;)

We wouldn't want to cause any unnecessary cardiac strain on the patient... or an unnecessary Fire Dep't Dispatch.

Very funny!

That is so true, though you never know what the patient is thinking when you tell them about procedures/meds/treatments. Bottom line - BE SPECIFIC and verify that they know what you are up to.

Man, it's even trickier when the patient is disoriented. It requires twice the commitment and patience needed usually. hehehe ;)

an elderly stroke patient was sitting in a chair in his room. I said" Mr. Jones-we need to get in the bed". Mr Jones said (he was serious) "are you getting in the bed with me?" Needless to say, I never said that to a patient again!
