| Posted over 4 years ago Something alot of people dont think about is what is that hospital's turnover? If a facility has a super high turnover, it could be a red flag that they might have problems <maybe with benefits, maybe alot of complaints by staff members, a hospital in Chattanooga, TN is hungry for nurses.............they recently started a 'mandatory overtime' policy, and they work <this is by a person I dont know well> 5 12 hr shifts/weekly. That would suck. A person's health and morale would drop so fast. This could be rumor.........but the person explaining it to a group of us seemed like she had her facts. If a facilty offers a huge sign on bonus, beware..............if they are paying people to sign a contract for that cash to stay on staff for a certain period of time, ask alot of questions <like 8 hr shifts vs 12 hrs, overtime, holidays, sick time, that sort of thing. In my opinion, Id prefer a place that has a low turnover with good benefits and great morale for the staff vs a huge sign on bonus. Ive done both, and that money is spent fast.....but misery can remain til that contract is over. Good luck. Angie |

| Posted over 4 years ago great post! Wish I could go on the interview with you and ask questions that I wish I would have asked. Dont ask: about nurse to patient ratios. Most of the time they count every nurse on the payroll, even if they are only PRN one day every 6 months. That way, they can say they have a 120 bed unit, and 60 nurses, so that is a 1:2 ratio! Then you get hired, and you have a med pass from hell and no help. It just is what it is. Expect the worst. Ask about what they expect from you as an employee. Express your values as a nurse and ask them how they will support you to.Go online and look up the Press Ganey scores for that hospital, print it out and take it with you to the interview. Ask them if they are happy with how they stand. (Personally, I hate those F%#%#^%$ Press Ganey surverys, but it will impress the HELL out of an interviewer that you know what they are) Ask them if you will have a preceptor and how long the orientation is once you get on the floor. They should be able to reassure you that they will not simply start you out with a patient load of 12 patients and expect you to be able to handle it. If they are vague, it should set off your b.s. detector. RUN! |
