Hello,

I came across this post on a coast guard spouse forum, and I want to give her advice from professionals,

So, is it normal for a 10 month old to have a rectal temp hovering between 102 and 104.5 for 3 days straight? It's my first so tell me if I am over reacting, but I am going insane here!

Took him in today. He has tonsilitis. So, when will the fever go down????

He won't eat. He drinks about half what he usually does. He is not sleeping. He cries and cries and cries and cries....

Yes, we are doing Tylenol and Motrin.

Please no scary posts. I'm scared enough as it is.

this is what i said back

Cool clothes on the babies forehead, cool baths.. Exactly what your doing with tylenol and motrin... Push fluids, careful with pushing too much pedialyte tho, my sons dr. said too much will cause diareha...If it continues to spike, I would go to the ER, and this is not to scare you, i'm an ER fanatic, if the doctors not open, and im nervous, home alone with child, there is nothing wrong with being safe than sorry.. right?

Your doing a great job! Its prolly pretty typical for the fever to be doing this because of the tonsilitus, But, on the other hand, don't let that fever stay high, i wont scare you, ill just say research fevers in babies to give you an idea

Good Luck!

Tonsillitis is often caused by a virus, and  will resolve on its own. But, tonsillitis can also be caused by strep throat bacteria and will need antibiotics to get resolved. As with many viruses and bacterial infections, the child will run a temperature.  It is very important to keep an eye for symptoms of dehydration, Dry mouth and tongue, lack of urination or tears when the child cries are good indicators. Try to push fluids like pedialyte, but keep in mind that tonsillitis is very painful. That's why the lack of food/liquid consumption.  You might try the liquid formula, also you can try the popsicles, soup or a clear broth helps too.  Warm liquid help with the discomfort. As you mention pedialyte or any liquid in larger quatities will cause diarrhea, but also, someone that has not had any solid food for large periods of time and is consuming liquids only will have diarrhea due to the lack of solids.

Also if Strep was diagnosed, the child might also complain of ear pain.

Home remediess like salt water gargling, and warm tea seems to help.  For children younger than a year, gargles might be a little difficult.

Over the counter pain relievers like acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), should be given following your doctor's instructions. Do not give any medicine containing aspirin. Children younger than 6 months should not be given any medication without first consulting your Primary doctor o pediatrician.

If the child continues to run a fever and improvement is not seen, please call your medical provider or take the child to the nearest emergency room.

Note that for military members, Tricare will cover emergency medial treatment without a referral if your clinic is closed, or if the nearest place of treatment is a civilian hospital.

To be on the safe side, make sure that if possible, before you go, call Tricare, that way they can notify you if a referral is needed and issue one prior of you going.  DO THIS ONLY IF THE CONDITION IF THE PATIENT IS NOT LIFE THREATENING.

Good luck.
