Hi all

I'm going back into nursing after a 20 break to raise my kids.  I'm going through a refresher and will start clinicals in a few weeks.  I want to know what instruments should I have and how best to carry them?  I remember as a younger version of me, I had a penlight, scissors, and pen and would just keep them jumbled up in my pocket.  Do you use a pocket organizer?  What instruments should I purchase and have on me?  I'll be working in a hospice unit.

Scissors, pens, hand sanitizer.  Penlight, not necessary unless you're doing neuro checks, which may or may not apply in a hospice situation. This is just my opinion.

I the hospice inpatient or outpateint?  Definately good stethescope, plenty of black pens <I like the clicky ones, the ones where you dont have to pull the tip cover off>..........I've used for years my Littman lightweight.  I never purchased the more pricey Cardiology Littman because for my function, I heard fine with my littman.  If you do travel hospice instead of something with more of an inpt version,   In homehealth work environment, I'd even get a 'cheap stethescope, I saw "prestige' ones that sound nearly as good as my littman......and it was only $20.  My littman was $65 several years ago.   I dont use a penlight for anything other than looking for something in my car in the dark, myself.  In the hosp and neuro checks are needed, I just grab one of the unit ones.

We only have one heart, take care of it!

Hemostats, straight or curved, transpore and paper-tape on handle, clipped to bottom edge of scrubtop.  Scissors, I keep 2 pair, bandage and trauma shears on a caribeaner clipped in my wastband.  In the hospital setting I keep a small LED, AAA battery flashlight.  It keeps me from having to turn on the light to go check an IV pump, Foley bag, etc.

Palm TX, I wouldn't have survived nursing school without it!  I kept my class schedule (work schedule now) on it.  I program all my med and VS times into it, so I never miss one.  I also have Tabors dictionary and a med book on it, so I never "don't know", I can always look it up. The best thing is the "Note" function, you can write on the screen with the stylus, or your pen, or anything semi pointed (even your finger), great for things like vitals, or making notes about your assessment, and it time-stamps each entry.  So when you go back to chart (on the computer like we do) you always know EXACTLY "when was it that I did that assessment?"

For those who are in Medical line there is a VERY unique and interesting site. At Medical Tools instruments are top quality and competitive too. Whenever I’ve to buy a product I visit www.medical-tools.com for comprehensive surgical and dental instruments, it’s a pretty good place to shop I highly recommend it for anyone with even a passing interest in surgery.
