I have noticed recently that a lot of the nurses I work with act like they are in high school. They are constantly talking trash about others and spreading rumors and lies. I choose not to participate in these discussions although I often over hear it and stand up for the person if I can. Anyway...any advice on how to deal with this? It has been brought up to management by other nurses with little resolution. Its just brings me down and makes me feel I work in a hostile environment.

Thanks

Well it could be because you are working in a hostile environment.  My advice is to quietly document what you hear, do not ever join into a conversation  with the perpetrators for any reason, other than patient care. Encourage the other nurses who are not a part of the gossiping group to do the same.  After a month of documentation, then jointly submit all the information (keep a copy of everything for yourselves) and demand something be done.

I deal with the same thing so I know how you feel. Only thing is, mamagement is just as bd about it. With everything I hear about others and hear from tyhe grapevine about myself it sucks really. The DON is one of the biggest trash talkers we have.
