If you are a practicing RN, online nursing programs are a great way to enhance your career. Many schools, such as Independence University, offer Bachelor of Science in Nursing ( http://www.independence.edu/bachelor-science-nursing-degree-bsn.php ) programs for RNs to help them advance professionally.

However, if you don’t have an RN license, then you need to first complete a college or university degree or hospital-administered diploma that will qualify you to sit for the NCLEX-RN exam and obtain the license.

Not all programs are the same, but my degree is a Bachelor in Science and my major was nursing (therefore, technically a science degee, not a nursing degree).

That meant that I took microbiology for microbiologist, anatomy and physio for antomists, etc.  But beside a solid science background, try to take a course in proof-reading.

My instructors shoved paper-writing (at the Masters level) down our throats -- and I am glad that they did.  It helped me in the rest of my bachelors courses and into graduate school.
