Ok nurses, I'm writing a research paper and I have to prove a point. The one topic I think would be good and related to what I want to do is this one; " Nurses are taught to be more compassionate to patients and develope a certain degree of closeness." Yes please tie in patient advocates. Nurses look after the patients day in and day out but doctors drop by occasionally. I believe nurses truely are patient guardians and spokespeople for them. Any advice or resources to back up this theory would be more than awesome. stories are good too. anything should help and please post fast. I need this evidence for tomorrow. Also i might tie in this paper about how it seems that doctors put off an arrogant air around them towards nurses. I'm not sure about this last bit yet but diffinitly help with the topic stated about. thank you very much for your input.

This topic is no longer needed for my research. Thank you to all who wanted to help. I appreciate it very much. If you wish to keep posting in here because you think it might help other people then go ahead. I just don't need the information anymore.

I do not believe that nurse are taught compassion, I think that is a characteristic that is developed overtime. I AGREE  that we develpo a closeness with our patients. That is why we are their advocates because we know all about their pains, plans and problems. If they stay in the hospital long enough we find out all the family dynamics, we ask about their children and grandchildren. We know that if Ms. Jones wears here yellow gown she is having a good day but if she stays in the bed past breakfast she is not feeling well. even when she says that she is fine. we don't mind holding here hand through the painful spasms and we sliently cheer when they recieve a phone call from the daughter that lives out of state that has not checked on mom in a few weeks. Yes we are their avocate, confident and nurse, even when  we deliever bad needs we stick around to make sure that they really understand the diagnosis, we give a new meaning to the term informed consent.

You may want to read the book from Novice to expert by Patricia Benner, it was part of my required coursework during my master's program, then you may understand why I say compassion is developed.

hi smee... your work is also related with my paper, Im a nursing student and im on the way to my research defense this upcoming month of march. mine is the communication between nurse and client, all about the barriers between it. so.. um.....REMEMBER that first thing first......... DOCTOR cures........... NURSES cares.... (^^,) Yeah, your post is true. Doctors aonly drop by inside their patients room for only a short time. but we, nurses.. we are the one who is always beside the patients. Nurse's characteristic of being humble, compassionate, kind, loving and soft hearted is not a lesson that our instructors taught us, but it is the inner soul of a good nurse. it is hidden deep inside our heart. you must love your work, your responsibilities and most of all... your client. good communication starts from us (nurses). we should be open minded, patient's do love friendly and cheerful nurses. They also love their doctors.. but nurses are the one who is always with them. here, check this out. the difference between doctors and nurses...

-Nurses act very much like soldiers on the front line, winning the small battles and calling upon the doctor when big problems arise. They interact with patients on a more personal level while the "generals" oversee the larger operation.

- Doctors also deal with much of business and politics that are associated with running a efficient and profitable medical practice. So while doctors and nurses do both share the same physical workspace, both play different positions on the field and view their environments in completely different ways.

-Nurses are educated to know how to perform many different tasks so as to free up time for a more specialized Doctor, who is usually focused on very technical aspects of medical care.

-Put a doctor and a nurse of the same age together, and I'll guarantee you the nurse has had more actual hands on experience at her job than the doctor has. The doc spends many years in school while the nurse was already getting their hands dirty on the job.

Differences between doctors’ and nurses’ communication with patients
Nurses’ contributions tended to be:

·  more dependent on interaction

·  connected and built to fit with, open to patients’ (and doctors’)

contributions,

·  more local and immediate in direction, tying with what has just

been said

Doctors’ contributions tended to be:

·  more self-sufficient and complete in themselves

·  distanced from, and independent of, patients’ (and nurses’)

contributions,

·  more extensive and far-reaching, imparting a sense of direction and

a trajectory that transcended patients’ (and nurses’) talk

·  Nurses tended to remain open to suggestion from the patient (or doctor), and

this offered opportunities for patients to say more.

·  When patients were talking, nurses tended to be open to the patient

continuing, whereas doctors tended to be moving on to a next turn or phase

in the consultation.

·  At those same points where nurses tended to invite patients to expand,

doctors tended to close down sequences of talk.

·  This gave doctors’ consultations a sense of direction not present in nurse

consultations. At the same time, it precluded certain opportunities for the

patient to speak.

Thank you very much both of you. Your information was very interesting. I'm glad you took the time to help. Unfortunatly I had to change my topic. I'm sorry you spent the time writing in here and then I haven't been able to use the information. It's nice to know that you wanted to help though. I am very thankful for both persons responses.
