OMG!!

I thought  I heard and saw it all, but there's this baby on my unit with microgenisis of his jaw .  He  was trached at birth because he has no upper airway. He's a year old  now and has been hospitalized since birth. He can not get his jaw constructed  nor his airway reconstructed until he is about two years of age.  We have coded him about four  times in his little life because his airway was lost.  Latley  his dad has been complaining that the insurance Co. (CIGNA) has been questioning the seriousness of his critical airway.

WELL!!!  the other day mom, dad,ENT, pulmonology and the critical care docs  swooped down  on the babies room. GUESS WHY !!!! to decanulate him  to prove to the insurance Co. that this child  would rapidly decompasate  with out his airway. The insurance Co. didn't want to continue paying for a critical care bed. Their medical team wanted to transfer him to a pediatric long term care facility until he's old enough to get his airway and jaw reconsructed.  Can you imagine  almost loosing your child 4 times,  actually witnessing your baby being coded, then have an insurance co harrass you because they want to move him to a lower level of care.  If I was'nt there I would'nt have believed it. That SH*T was ridiculous. I was Soooo! outraged.

OH!

The baby desated to 78%spo2 with in 10 seconds. he was recanulated. Mom was histerical, dad was pissed off , the medical team was disgusted  after reportting the results, they collectivly  filed a compliant against the insurance co. Eventhough the baby was recanulated with out any problem, he was  confused and frightened.

Unbelievable. That is deplorable!! That poor family, having to go through such a tragedy on top of the chronic life threatening issues their little baby has.

My father has Cigna ins.  When he was hospitalized after suffering a major heart attack, it wasn't a Doctor who released him from the hospital, it was an Ins rep.  I walked into ICU, and there she was in my fathers chart....they came in, took the cath out, sat him up, and said ok well you can go home now.  He had heart surgery and they sent him home the next day.  I don't think that an Ins company has the right to dicatate medical treatment or care.  If my father had stayed, maybe it would not have been 3 more years before they dx him with Leukemia, which if you go back to hospital records was very evident at the time of his heart attack.  Cigna wouldn't even pay for him to have Nutritional counseling, being that he was diabetic and never had dealt with the disease before.

Ins companies need to really look at what they are doing.  You are right butterfly, it is truely amazing.....and outraging.

Butterfly, that is probably one of the saddest stories I have ever heard. I don't even know what to say! I had that our healthcare system is virtually dictated by insurance companies. Health workers practically have their hands tied when it comes to caring for patients. So sad.
