I'm an old nurse - RN.  Haven't worked much in 5 yrs. due to surgery for cataracts and having diabetes.  However, I would love to work part time.  Those are dirty words here in FL.  Hospitals only want young, right out of school nurses who don't want much money.  Lots of talk in the nursing journals about "returning to nursing" and "refresher courses for older nurses" but it ain't down here, people.  I am now in school to get my BSN and hope then to obtain an MSN, maybe more.  No, I can't lift some 400 lb. guy in the ICU on a ventilator, but I can read a monitor like nobody's business.  I have lots of experience in lots of areas but who cares?  I'm a nurse.  I've always been a nurse.  I love the profession.  Give me a break!  If the US really needs nurses, hospitals should loosen up on the 12 hr. shifts and "full time or nothing" stuff.

Sarah, I left Florida about 12 years ago, and it doesn't sound like much has changed from what your writing, that's how it was when I was there.

That's a shame!  New Jersey isn't like that at all.

Nurses can get per diem work almost anywhere, and choose their shifts. My daughter-in-law signs up for per diem shifts on the hospital website. Just signs up for whatever she wants to work.

I didn't reralize Florida had that kind of problem!
