What Happens if I make my license inactive?

Posted about 4 years ago Hello everyone, I have not worked since my last license renewa because I have become physically disabled. It's highly unlikely that I will be ever be able to return to nursing. It soon will be time to renew and I am unsure what to do. Should I retire my license or change to inactive status (in the hopes that I may improve enough to work.) If I make my license inactive, do I still have to take educational classes? Thanks for your help. Eulalia42

Posted about 4 years ago I'm sorry to hear about being disabled I'm sure it must be very hard for you. I think it would be great if you did keep your license. I know you let it expire, but I'm sure you can get it again. In Georgia, I think they might have to take the nclex again, but dont quote me on that. Why not call your state board of nursing, because you might not have to take it again. Good luck to you. We only have one heart, take care of it! Angie

Posted about 4 years ago I've always been told by different state boards to never allow your license to lapse in the state you were originally licensed in, so this is why most states allow you to place your license on inactive.

Posted about 4 years ago A friend of mine didn't get the info that we were supposed to renew. We both graduated and got our licenses in nov. 07 and had to renew in 08, she didn't know this, Earleir this week she found out, had to pay the renewall fee, a fine and 5 dollars for everyshift she worked since it expired. Came out to a grand total of 580 bucks. Ouch. Bet she wont ever do that again! "Softly. deftly, music shall caress you. Feel it, hear it, secretly possess you...."

Posted about 4 years ago Years ago I went inactive because I'm disabled too - then a year later I wanted to start a business, so reactivated the RN license. What a mess! And twice the expense! At least in New Jersey it doesn't pay to go inactive unless you are 100 % certain you'll never need the license again. CE credits are easy to get, so I just keep up with them whether I'm working or not. In NJ you need 30 per year.

Posted about 4 years ago So sorry to hear about yet another disabled nurse. I got hit with a large x-Ray machine in my knee and was out of work...had surgery, etc. so I know how it feels but I would never give up my license. Continuing ed courses online are really inexpensive and that license is truley invaluable. You may find an area you can work in with your disability that you will get because your an RN. Good luck Kathy

Posted almost 4 years ago Please don't go inactive. It is hard to get your liscense back at least in GA and the board has not helped me at all. No matter if you think you will never use it Keep it! Hope you are feeling better.

Posted almost 4 years ago Sorry about disability. Requirements for re-activation vary from state to state. Some require taking exam over, some only doing CEs and paying fee, many require a refresher program and/or clinicals. I would try and keep in case you can get a phone triage or insurance or other job from home if need be. I would also check with my states BON for their rules as well as check into exceptionalnurses.com website for disabled nurses that one of my nurse refresher students just loves. She found special stethscope that goes over her hearing aides and other stuff and support. In our state we also have Dept of Assistive and Rehabiltative Services (DARS) that helps nurses and others return to work and find special employment. Good luck to you.

I agree, keep your license active. I am doing everything in my power to finish what I was called to do, and when it is finished, i then knew that I have had finished my calling. God Bless everyone, this Sunday night. I am a proud mother of three beautyful daughter. I currently live in Los Angeles California. I've worked as a heathecare provider for almost 10 years. I am curently in school to pursue my MSN in nursing, and wants to work as a pediactric nurse, in public health. |
