What should we call ourselves?

There was a long discussion about not calling yourself a nurse if you are not a licensed nurse. We have many titles in our field with nurse included. Licensed Practical Nurse, Licensed Vocational Nurse, Certified Nursing Assistant, Registered Nurse, Advance Practice Nurse, and Nurse Practitioner. Due to the confusion of what an NP actually does and confusion regarding the title, there have been a few discussions regarding changing the title from NP to something else. Some get very irate about keeping nurse in the title. How do you feel about the title Nurse Practitioner? When/how did you learn what an NP does? What do you think the title Nurse Practitioner should be changed to?

I like the title NP. I didn't know what it was until I was out of college (age 23 or so) and one of my best friends from highschool was doing the 3 year master program at Yale to be an NP. I kept saying, "so when you're done with this, you'll be an RN, right?" and then she would explain that she would also be an NP... :)

too many do not know what/who an NP is, that is why there is talk of changing the title.

Who is talking about it? so the new name would help explain what NPs actually do? would it be changed to something similar to "Physicians Assistant"?

Something similar to PA yes is what the talk was. I am not 100% sure where this all started.
