I have been an LPN for 18 years and started taking the steps to continue on for my RN this spring at the age of 48 (49 in Sept) I have about a years worth of education left towards my RN. I know of a few nurses older than me continuing on so I hope 50's not to old. I might not even stop at my ADN! I just love school.....to bad it doesn't pay

Help, I always wanted to be a nurse.  Now that the kids are grown, and husband retired from police force.  I have the time and energy, but Is it really a bad choice to even consider going back to school at  fifty to be a nurse.      Anyone out there that has the same calling at fifty???

I'm sorry but I think that anyone that has been "THINKING" about this for well over a year now has already made the decision. It was nice to read all the comments though. Maybe that was what was supposed to come out of this some good old fashioned sharing!!!

To: Loriarush

You give me hope and WAY TO GO. You sound like me a few weeks ago!!! Congradulations and good luck! You got what it takes to make it for sure! It's refreshing!!!

I want to first thank Nurse John for jolting my dream back in front of me, and to help me see it can be done in our fifties!    Also to thank all of you here for your hands with pulling and helping me keep MY DREAM A LIVE, AND IN FRONT OF ME.   I talked to my husband and told him this is what I want for me!     I will take ACTION TODAY to make this a dream no matter what will come at me??   I know it won't be easy but I'm ready to follow it~

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH....... FOR THE ENCOURAGEMENT at this time in my life~

God show me the way........

But you made it happen. See, you've already grown to be a stronger person. How much more you will grow as you continue to empower yourself.

At 54, I just completed my first semester of pre-reqs.  It is my dream to become a RN.  When I enrolled, I was given the Compass Math Placement Test.  It has been a while since I've been in school and my score placed me into math refresher/elementary algebra.  The first week of class, the instructor gave us a diagnostic test to determine our weaknesses.  At the end of 15 weeks, he gave another diagnostic test. In three of the five areas tested, my scores were more than triple the first time.  Last week I retook the Compass test and scored high enough to go into College Math in the fall.  I also took a biology and my final grade is a B.

At times it was hard and I became frustrated and thought about quitting.  But this is my dream and I won't give up.  So I studied hard and put in long hours. It is my determination and perserverence that has helped me so far.  I will be taking a class online during the summer and looking ahead to the fall.

I know I will accomplish my dream. I will succeed.  I will be the nurse I want to be.

Nursing is one of those professions that you can work at almost any age.  I  am just sorry that I waited until I was 45 to go back for my Bachelor's Degree.  We have a nurse in our Case Management Department that is working prn at the 'spry' age of 76 and doing well at it.

I am turning 53 after I start back to school this Fall. I met with my counselor today and I have a dozen classes to complete before the two yr nursing program! Because I placed low on the math test I have to start at the bottom, no big deal! I want to learn!!! I have to take 5 math classes too! I figure by the time I complete my pre req's  I will be 55 yrs of age and then the nursing program is another two yrs so that puts me at 57 when I graduate! I plan to work till they put me in the ground! lol I worked as a personal trainer/massage therapist / esthetician for the past 25 yrs and have a passion to help people and this will be the ultimate challenge! love anatomy! the math will be a challenge but heck thats why there are tutors!!!! yup I will use them to get me through!!!!any advice  or suggestions welcome!!!!!!

Hey, you're still young. I graduated from nursing school in 2009 at the age of 59. It is never too late to learn. Go for it. You'll be glad you did.

I don't think 50 is too old.  I will be 34 when I start the program and 36 when I finish.  I say go for it!

Thank you for this post. I am a bit younger than you were at the time you posted this. I am having problems in getting approved for a  Ca BRN NCLEX-RN retest. I was found eligible to test (like I said, I am trying to re-take it), I was even given an interim permit to practice nursing for 6 months. Due to inconsistencies with their licensing unit, I am being adversely affected.

Age is the major factor all these is stressing me out. I feel too old not to be able to have a successful career in my chosen field. To think that I finished 2 courses.

My husband and I are planning on having a child 2-3 years from now, after we save up a bit. This new struggle is really going to derail our future.

Your perseverance is admirable =) I wouldn't say that I don't have that, but I'm just not as lucky as everyone seems to be    I almost feel like I'm jinxed.   Again, thank you for your post.

14 years ago when I graduated there were 3 people in our class at the age of 50 or over. For Cynthia this was her second career she was a hairdresser, she made it thru with honors!

The second one kept to himself I think he thought he didnt belong. His first career was a DJ!

The third one Sheldon, I took under my wing. I was the Valivictorian of our graduating class. I am not boasting but I got every award except for one and Sheldon got that one! It was for most likely to suceed! Sheldon had a hard way to go. He was an African American married to a Caucasion wicked witch RN that pushed and pushed him! She made him work third shift, tend to thier newborn and then he came to class a mess! I had to pinch him to keep him awake and I actually took him in the hall and told him if he sit by me he was gonna stay awake and pay attention because I didnt want the instructors thinking it was me! I did everything I could do to help that man. We had a small group of us that would have potlucks everyday and we invited him and quizzed him and kept him awake! I am proud to say that he stood beside me when we were asked to move our tassles (can't remember what side when graduated) and I have a pic of him holding his baby and me standing beside him. Sheldon was over 50 and deserved everything and got it on his own he just needed that nudge from someone who at the time was blessed enough not to work so I had enough energy for us both to succeed with honors!

It won't be easy, but nothing worth fighting for is easy. You can do it! Find you a group or just one person to study with it helps! Believe me when I say I graduated highschool by the skin of my teeth! ( I think they wanted to get rid of me!) If I can graduate with every honor including the deans list, the presidents list, perfect attendence, hannah jenkins award, sigma beta ki induction and more I cant remember then you can do it too! Many nights I went to bed with headphones on listening to my own voice reading chapters I needed for the next day, the I would play it inn the car as well. You do what works for you but you CAN DO IT!!!!! I am praying for you!

Thank you for being the way you were with Sheldon.

People like you are angels from above for those who are on their rock bottom.

I wish there were more people like you.
