now I have three.  When they first discovered this tiny nodule they did an ultrasound and lab tests all of which were normal so they would just check it annually until about 2 years ago when the ultrasound showed I had 3 small nodules instead of one and I was ordered to get another ultrasound 4 mos. later which I never got and here it is 2 years later and I just so a new PCP Friday and she felt the original nodule which has increased in size to 1 cm from less than 1cm (do not know exact measurement of it initially).  Also, I know I have two other nodules she gave me the number of a lab to call to get an ultrasound and that same day I was there she had me do bloodwork for prediabetes because my weight has shot up in the past year I have gained like 60 pounds without doing much different in my diet.  She also ordered TSH as a part of the blood work and I believe that is a thyroid hormone she is checking on.  I am kinda nervous and don't know how likely this could be something cancerous or not I am so mad I waited so long too. :(

I had a similar experience back 10 or so years ago.  I too had put on the pounds, about 40, which i could not account for with my diet/nutrition.  i found the nodular growth while showering and as a smoker it sent me straight to my PCP.  From there it was a rush, rush to get tests done.  Bloodwork then an ultasound.  Once the ultrasound was done, i was sent right on to a surgeon.  On the first eval visit they pushed me to have a needle biopsy right then.  I consented as I had become very alarmed.  I had a long weekend to wait for the results but finally got a call from the surgeon that cleared me of cancerous growth.  It turned out to be a multi-nodular growth on my thyroid and I began on Synthroid.  DM does not run in my family at all thankfully and so far none has shown up in me.  I have been on Synthroid now for over 10 years and doing well.  Had very few times that i needed adjustment in my dosage either.  They weight just began to melt off me once I started taking the Synthroid.  Again, no changes in my diet/nutritional habits either.  I will have to be on Synthroid forever as my thyroid gland has atrophied.  The doctor's seem to think that prior to my initial discovery of the nodules years ago,  that I had Hashmoto's(spelling might be incorrect) that overcame my thyroid gland and led to the development of my problems.  Good luck to you as I am sure you will find that it is treatable.  keep us posted.  my prayers are with you.

Don't be mad at yourself.  We all get anxious.  I had a thyroid nodule a couple of years back.  I saw my PCP who referred me to an endocrinologist. By the time I got the appointment with the endocrinologist, the lump disappeared.  I kept the appoinment however.  I had a scan and a needle biopsy.  Results came back fine, but the doctor thought I should have a partial thyroidectomy.  Good thing.  He said there was a very small focus of cancer cells in the path specimen.  No other treatment recommended.
