Chemical dependency is a way too mask true feelings and issues the patient may have. I also worked in a rehab/mentally ill facility. I found it very rewarding and enjoyed my job. You will learn hands on in time on what skills you need to acquire to work there. I found attending different groups that the patients attend very helpful. I am glad you enjoy your job as much as I did. Good luck!           Joni

I've done Chemical dependency as an RN since '96 and it can be challenging, the pts. often have poor insight/jugment, and with today's short hospital stays they often relapse and feel alot of guilt associted with that, it's tough on the patient as well as the nurse. Comfort meds aren'nt enough, I remember holding a pts. hand as she was in the turmoil of opite w/d, it was tough. She got through it. You have to have alot of medical knowledge, as well as love for your pts. They feel worthless, and hopeless in their addiction. You can do it!!! Good Luck.
