I was told that LPN's don't give shots or med's but then someone else said they can so I'm not sure who to believe. I thought that shots were given by RN's. Does anyone have an answer for me

In most states now, I'm told LPN/LVN's give meds and injections.  Some states they can not do IV meds and other states they can.  I don't know of any state where an LPN/LVN can start an IV but I may be behind the times.

It's my understanding that in Alabama LPN/LVN can start IVs as long as they have a certification class.  But I think it depends on the facility.  The Hospital I worked for they could not start them on anyone under 12yrs of age. They could give meds (pills, injections, iv meds like antibiotics) but they could not push IV meds or give blood products. Again it depends on the facility. Most require a registered nurse to be physically present and immediately available in the facility.
