retail or janitor?

Posted about 4 years ago I am currently going to school to become a surgical tech, then I will continue on to become a nurse. I am almost 40 years old. Currently I work in retail and I absolutely hate it. I was thinking about trying to get some sort of a position in a hospital, whether it be cafeteria, or janitor or receptionist, whatever. The problem is, my husband thinks that by doing this, it would make getting a position as a nurse more difficult when the time comes. He thinks that nurses might look down on me for a janitor trying to become a nurse. Is this a possiblility? Should I just stick it out in retail for now? What do you think? Any advice would be appreciated. Also, what positions would be good in a hospital? I have no clue. Thanks very much for your advice.

| Posted about 4 years ago You could apply for a unit coordinator/secretary position, or patient sitter, or any other clerical positons....the qualifications for those positions are a high school diploma. And most hospitals have a tuition reimbursment program and some even having nursing programs. Check your local hospital websites, they should have all the available positions and the qualifications. Good luck!!! Shell |

| Posted about 4 years ago Most nurses admire someone who started out at the bottom and worked their way towards a goal. I know many nurses and physicians who started out in ancillary positions, ie orderlies, laundry, housekeeping etc. If you're so unhappy in retail, then do what is best for you! |
