Do any of you, um, ahh, "more mature" (heh heh heh!) suspect that you are being discriminated against in hiring?  I am beginning to wonder; I've several friends in the, um, 'older' catergory, and we are not having a lot of success in getting posted to jobs with the same ease as the youngsters.... what say y'all?

Perhaps so; I think that that is a shame, as this it important..... to me, at the least! :^))

With the 'shortage' as it is, I didn't think that there would be any difficulty finding work, yet for myself and a few others, the opportunities for work in acute care venues is not happening... makes me wonder.

I have to ask Korba....

Do you have "factual sources" for this "age discrimination" that you and your friends are experiencing? Or is it just opinion based here say that this discrimination could in fact be going on???

Ha ha ha...  unfortunately you failed to notice that I did not make a statement, (something like 'blatant discrimination, if I recall) I asked a question.  Unlike others on this site who are quick to whine and cry about situations that they have not researched and, consequently, know nothing about.  Your comprehension of the english language prompts me to recommend English as a Second Language.  Have someone who can read find it for your in your local high schools adult ed. catalog.

What type of positions are you applying for?  How padded is your resume?

That's pretty funny since English is a class that I always ace...so your snotty little remarks really don't mean much to me.

If it will make you happy, I could always go back and edit my post to say:

"I have several friends who are making less money per hour than their male counterparts with the exact same level of experience and education. Do any of you, um, ahh, female nurses suspect you are being discriminated against? Do you think that they are getting paid more primarily because they are male? Makes me wonder."

Maybe if I'm more vague with my ideas like you are and don't make any straight up statements that this discrimination really is going on that would appease your obsessive need for researched sources in order to form an opinion on something.

To both of you-stop it! Smile! I have noticed since turning 50 that I can't find a full time job.  In september I quit my job to do PRN, (Family stuff, my sacrifice-don't ask). Well I am ready to work a full time night job and have been applying online, in person, faxing to the tune of 57 jobs and not one call. Something is amiss. I have great references and a ton of experience.  Well I am about to start my own business so that nix that.

I lost my job in may because I had to have a spinal fusion and now I am a 50year old nurse with a bad back and no job.  Since I lost my job I have gone on at least 7 interviews and have applied to over 20 jobs. No one will hire me. I can't tell them why I lost my job so I just tell them I resigned for personal reasons which doesn't help either.  I did find a job with a temp agency but have no benefits so this doesn't really work either.  I was recently hired for a position at a place with a high turnover due to the facility. It is sad that I can't find work in the area that I truly love which is in the OR. Any advice that anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Have any of the active/retire nurse out there in the healthcare system been made to feel like you should be sent out to pasture? I am 65 years old, have been a nurse for 30 years; med-surg, Emergency Dept and Radiology nursing experience and all of a sudden, I have been made to feel that I must account for my every action and what I am doing. In Radiology nursing we cover many modalities so a Rad nurse could be in any of these places at a given time. Lately, the supervisor wants to know where I am and what I am doing. I am still very active, worked every day with a fracture pelvis, two years ago. I am looking at a hip replacement in my near future but I come to work every day and do what I am suppose to do. My patients have nothing but nice things to say, my peers in all modalities are supportive, but this one supervisor, who is 20 years younger seems to think I cannot do anything. I started documenting all of  her negative interactions that she calls me on. I would like to retire from this facility next year, Feb, after turning 66. How do other nurses handle this type of problem with a younger supervisor? I would love some help with this issue...Thanks.

I really do not care what the other nurses think. I am 63 years old and will retire in 3 years, yet I can still run rings around a lot of the younger nurses. I do not pretend to know everything, but I do know a lot about nursing and seem to be asked a lot of questions by the younger nurses. I feel that I am still a very good nurse and will work until retirement.

At 52,,I've been told by the younger crowd that us older nurses aren't  'malable', in other words, we will question orders, are 'set in our ways'. I know several nurses out of work, and yet other nurses working doubles and overtime,,,don't get it,,,my boss is 62,,I'm 'kiddo' in our company,,the youngest nurse,,,I'm lucky that my boss appreciates experience,,,I was appalled in college a couple of years ago,,,the new nurses wil not,,,,take care of the elderly,,,,take care of sick people,,,work nites, weekends,,holidays,,,refuse to work in long term care,,,only healthy babies,,,,,scary,,,these will be our caregivers in the future!!!!

I'm a nuby to nurse link and have enjoyed the forums that I have participated in. This particulara one is one that touches me very close to home.  I am 66 an would like to keep working as long as I can (4 more years atleast) . I have, to this point , not had any problems finding new positions, however now I wander.  I bring to the table 33 yrs of experience in varying fields, as well as dependability  and a good work ethic.   I cchecked with our bne and was told there was   no mandatory  retirement age for nurses as long as you were physically, mentally, and emotionally able to continue working: however i hear some comments made that as a pt. some would prefer the younger nurse to the more mature nurse thinking that the younger one would have more knowledge as opposed to the older one that has had more experience and has developed an area of nursing that is not often covered in class but on the floor and that is called common sence applied to your  accemical knowledge.
