Posted about 4 years ago I will graduate from an associate degree nursing program in Dec and I realyy want to become a surgical nurse. The OR really really intrigues me. I find med surge boring. I would like to treat the patient before he gets to the floor. I know that is where I belong. The thought of seeing a live heart up close is sooo exciting. In my clinicals I have done just about everyhting but the OR. Saftey issues of course. BUt how do I go about gettin there? Are there additional classes or certificates and what depts should I pursue to be in the OR course of promotion? (I will be practicing in Il.) |

| Posted about 4 years ago You start doing research and find a hospital, offering a residency situation for OR training. Most of these you must sign a contract, for at least two years of employment, in order to get into their program. The cost of training an OR nurse is in excess of $100,000.00 for one year of training. Lots of money, which is why you sign the contract. |

| Posted about 4 years ago You normally have to do at least one year of med surg before you go into any specialties. I would just recommend working in a hospital to get your foot in the door and then transfering to another department. Companies would rather hire within. I where I work the nurses who like the OR start on the surgical and ortho floor first. |
