I will graduate from an associate degree nursing program in Dec and I realyy want to become a surgical nurse.  The OR really really intrigues me.  I find med surge boring.  I would like to treat the patient before he gets to the floor.  I know that is where I belong.  The thought of seeing a live heart up close is sooo exciting.  In my clinicals I have done just about everyhting but the OR.  Saftey issues of course.  BUt how do I go about gettin there?  Are there additional classes or certificates and what depts should I pursue to be in the OR course of promotion? (I will be practicing in Il.)

You start doing research and find a hospital, offering a residency situation  for OR training.  Most of these you must sign a contract, for at least two years of employment, in order to get into their program.  The cost of training an OR nurse is in excess of $100,000.00 for one year of training.  Lots of money, which is why you sign the contract.

You normally have to do at least one year of med surg before you go into any specialties.  I would just recommend working in a hospital to get your foot in the door and then transfering to another department.  Companies would rather hire within.  I where I work the nurses who like the OR start on the surgical and ortho floor first.
