I currently have a Minnesota Transfer Curriculum Associate of Arts Degree.  This is a general transfer degree.  I want to become a nurse and am currently taking prerequisites for the ADN program at a local Technical College.  My question is am I wasting my time getting yet another Associates Degree? Should or can I just go to a four year school for nursing to obtain my Bachelors?  Or do I have to get another Associates Degree to become a Licensed Registered Nurse before I can get a Bachelors degree?

No I dont feel that you are wasting your time.  I would apply to both programs and see which one I got into.  It all depends on you do you want to work as a RN in two years or four years.  You dont have to have a ADN to get a BSN you can go straight for your bachelors.  I got my AA degree while completing my pre req's and then I decided to go for my LPN and I am now pursuing my RN online.  Some people may think that I did things backwards but this worked for me because I am able to work as a nurse while still attending school.  There is nothing wrong with going for your associates and then going back for your BSN.

Would it still take me four years to complete seeing as though I have a two year general degree already?  Also, I want to continue on to my masters after working as a nurse for at least a year.  I guess my concern is more about the money that I am going to be spending on my education.  I do not want to spend an unnecessary amount of money for an education when I could have gotten the same education for less.  I am concerned about the quality of my education as well.

The questions you ask can only be accurately answered by:

1. Examining, closely, the catalog outlining prerequisites for the institution at which you would pursue a BSN.  Your AA will, most likely, have given you most of the general education requirements that you need for entry into a BSN program..... however, depending upon which classes you took filling out your electives you may be less ready.  IF you've already taken CHEM, MICRO, ANAT, PHYS, BIOL, COLLEGE ALGEBRA, and STATISTICS, then the number of whatever courses you still need will be small, and you may be able to be admitted to a BSN program, as a junior, and be permitted to take the odd course while you are in your junior year.  IF, HOWEVER, you got an AA w/o having taken any of these courses that are almost universally required before admission to a BSN program, the time it takes you to get them is going to add on to the length of study substantially, and you will not likely be admitted as a junior.  The length of time you are able to study w/o working may then be the determining factor in your choice.

2. Getting an appointment with a counselor at the college of your choice... this is almost as difficult as taking the courses at some colleges, LOL!

Thank you for such well thought out and detailed answer.  I now know at least what steps I need to take in order to make a well informed decision on what I will do.

I have already completed my prereqs for the Nursing program.  My only question is what is the difference between getting your diploma in nursing in a hosptial based program, versus getting your ADN? Both programs are two years in length....

I think the best way for you to get an answer to your question would be to post a whole new discussion topic  I am sorry but I do no know the answer to this question.  Good luck!
