My mother is an LPN but hasn't worked in a hospital setting for a very long time is telling me that there are no jobs for LPN's. This startled me and I have been thinking about changing to Surg Tech. However, I think I would have more choices being an LPN and I will also be able to complete the bridge program to be an RN. Can anyone give me advice about jobs for LPN's? I know where I want to end up and believe that LPN will get me going in that direction. Can you give me some pointers on what jobs are out there for LPN's and the best way to go about getting them. Thank you again for your help!

there are lots of jobs for LPNs-you don't have to work in a hospital. You can work in MD office, community health, assisted living facility, nursing home(I don't advise this one except as a last resort),quality care review, home health the possibilities are out there waiting for you.

I thought so. I would rather work in med/surg or peds rather than geriatrics. I just hope I can find what I want. Thank you for your post! It is much appreciated.

AJ, you mentioned you like to know the best ways to find and get those LPN jobs. Can you tell me how you go about it now? Do you take the traditional approach of posting your resume on numerous job sites? What have the challenges been to your current approach?

Around here, most LPN's work in LTC or Assisted Living. Over the past ten years or so, it seems as if the hospitals have been phasing them out in favor of RN's. Considering the nursing shortage I don't know how wise that is.

aj, I too am having the same problem as you. I just graduated LPN scholl on Oct. 4th, 2007. I graduated 4th in my class with a 3.8 gpa. I want so badly to work at a hosptial( which by the way is where they make us do our clinical rotation for 9/12 months) only to now find out that most hospitals are "phasing out" LPNs. My mentor (CDNURSE) has advised me to work for now where I can and go on for my RN so that this issue will be gone. Jenelle

As an active LPN, it is very hard to find a job outside of a LTC facility or assisted living. Like mentioned above most hospitals are "phasing out the LPN". If they do hire an LPN, they are typically used as a patient care provider, in which you get no real nursing experience. Most doctors offices are using medical assistants instead of LPN's. My advice is to go work at a LTC, get your required hours and move on to your RN. I was lucky enough to find a place that has given me a ton of experience as a LPN which in turn has given me more confidence that I will be able to handle the role of the RN once I am able to go back.

Many of the smaller hospitals and rural hospitals hire LPNs. However, they do little more than med passes. Still, you are in an environment where you can learn and if you find an RN mentor you will gain some great experience.

I can't wait to get my RN, because I am getting burnt out on LTC. I would just like more variety. I am working now in Hospiceand /Pallative care. I do not want to limit myself. I need more challenges. I am personally not satisified and do not like feeling limited. Don't get me wrong getting my LPN has been the best thing I have done for myself and has given me tremendous experiences, I just get bored easily I guess.

Although I am not sorry that I got my LPN first, if I had it to do over again I would go straight for the RN. There are certainly more challenges with the RN degree. It takes almost as long to get an LPN, not sure why more are not taking advantage of the ADN.
