Do male nurses make more than female nurses, Just because they are male???

I was in class yesterday and there was this guy who was saying when he becomes a nurse he will make A LOT more money than the rest of us female nurses. All based on the fact that he is male. He would have the same exact qualifications as the rest of us, but because he's male he will make more money? Has anybody seen this to be true? I thought sexism was illegal and if this is going on, then I know we haven't come very far as a society.

Just wanted to see what other peoples thoughts are on this.

Whether its a joke or not, this isn't funny, it's not the gender issue here, it's what you can give/provide to your patient...

I've neither seen this, nor heard of this occuring her in CA.  I know some classmembers, female, who were hired at more than I was, right out of school.

This isn't to say that it can't happen, despite its illegality, but I can' t believe a hospital will pay more for a guy just because he can help move patients; that's what transport teams are for....

Good grief, what BS. I've been in nursing management for years - if we tried to pay a male a higher rate we'd be in court defending a discrimination suit....

Obviously he was able to stir the pot by using you as a means to do that.  Be careful of that kind!

Sexism, racism and all the other types of "isms" are alive and well in the US.  People have evolved knowing that it can't be done as overtly as it once was.  Unfortunately, it will continue until the end of time.

Just google it, sadly it is true.....usually male nurses make a buck or two more than us female counterparts (blatant sexism).  As far as asking for a male nurse to assist with heavy patients, I've been asked by far more male nurses to put in suppositories, foley's, and doing peri-care on female pt's than I have asked for help lifting a pt.  Nursing is about teamwork, we all ask for help at one point, whether it's IV'S or meds or pulling up a pt.  If someone thinks they should be paid more because they are asked for pull help because they are Male, than they don't belong in nursing.

A long time ago, It used to be that on average,  male RNs made more money than female RNs because they were more likely to be promoted over females.  This was encouraged by female RNs who had less confidence in female leadership.

Male RNs are not there to be pack mules to do the heavy lifting.  As I moved out of the units,  and became a desk jockey like other  walking wounded RNs, there were quite a few men whose backs had been injured because of the abusive practice of having them do all of the heavy lifting.

well isnt that nice. Heaven forbid a man want to get into the profession because they want to help people. Because they have a huge amount of respect for nurses (or anyone in the medical field for that matter) and see what a difference they make in peoples lives. Believe it or not not all men in or pursing a nursing career are jerks looking for a paycheck and get off on the possibility of making a few extra bucks at the expense of their female counterparts. Sistas united, ya its ok cuz its all about girl power. Now if i said hey now, women just need to get there act together and quit trying to be cops and firemen and all these jobs that should be just for the boys. stick to cooking pot roast and doing my laundry since that's where you belong, oh and be sure to pop out a few kids while you at it. i suppose you could be a waitress or a hairstylist, my he-man ego would allow that. Would that be kosher? of course it wouldnt, id be called a sexist and a backward thinking pig. And i would whole-heartedly agree with you. Its bad enough we catch crap from our guy friends because we want to be nurses, we dont need it from our future coworkers.

Considering that nurses are in demand just about everywhere i think you need whoever is qualified and commited to the job, patients actually but that should go without saying.  Sexism is as stupid and counter productive form of discrimination as any.

It's no surprise that whoever made this statement did it anonymously.  I'm glad this is the EXCEPTION rather than the rule regarding most people's mentality.
