I would like to know too, I think they had a pay scale on here one year ago, for what was the highest pay scale for RN's in  each state.

I am a proud mother of three beautyful daughter. I currently live in Los Angeles California. I've worked as a heathecare provider for almost 10 years. I am curently in school to pursue my MSN in nursing, and wants to work as a pediactric nurse, in public health.

I have worked as a Travel RN for the past year. There are NO jobs out there, as a traveling RN, much less as a permanent employee. The economy has hurt nursing. I am currently back in Ohio (where I'm originally from), and I am having a hard time finding a job. The states that are MOST affected by the economy are: FLORIDA, CA, and AZ. It is 'suppose' to get better in 2010. Good luck to those who are looking for jobs in FL. I've heard that it is extremely hard to find jobs there, and the pay is low.

Several yrs. ago, this same thing happened with the nursing shortage, there were plentiful jobs, then the market changed, but then it bounced back, jobs became available, and plentiful. Now we're in this stinking recession--?depression, and same thing, jobs are again scarce. Time will again change things and prayerfully we'll all survive this economic crisis and become bountifully employed again as an RN!!I'm seeking a new path in nurs. career, a job from home as sedentary work, ? case mangmt. or something similar, any suggestions??

I'm afraid you are right. I've been an agency nurse in Houston since last March. I was usually able to do 36 hrs per week steadily. In March, it all just dried up. I've barely worked in the last 2 months. Every recruiter I've spoken to says that the economy is causing hospitals to tighten their belts. Also, censuses are low b/c unemployment has caused many to lose insurance, and therefore, not go to the doctor.

I've applied for a few full-time positions, with not much response so far. I may have to give in and work nights if things don't get better soon.

I did meet a nurse who was contracted from Florida. She said its really bad there. Some nurses from Lansing Michigan said the same. Houston is just starting to feel the pinch, and I feel like I'm getting a taste of it.

I completely agree with you. It is insane. What happened to what I was told throughout nursing school that nurses are in high demand, nursing has job security. Then 3 years after I get out into the nursing world I have gotten laid off, rehired and probably will be laid off again. I cannot believe the lack of job security there is in a field designated to helping the millions of ill people in this world. A local area hospital just laid off a 100 nurse and integrated their psych unit into the regular medical units. So you have a med-surg pt in one room then the next room over is a psych pt. going through a psychotic episode screaming at the top of his lungs. That is not beneficial in the healing of the med-surg pt that is next door. This is crazy. I live in Washington state which is a pretty decent-sized state, so the need for medical facilities and staff should be plentiful but they are not. This economy is affecting every state, no one is immune to it. Good luck to all in their job searches and keeping their current jobs. God Bless America...we need it...

Hospital admissions are down here in East Tennessee.  Jobs that provide insurance are down.  Hospitals are asking for money up front so many people are electing to stay home and deal with their infirmities the best way they can.  It's not all bad.  Hopefully hospital administrations will be able to hire the best nurses and let those who do poor jobs go.  It behooves all of us to be the best that we can be.

Northeastern Ohio has been hit hard by the down turn in the economy, but jobs for nurses are still in demand. For every hospital that is laying off there are others that are hiring. Most hospitals are not opening up new positions, but they are all filling positions as people leave. The nursing homes in northern Ohio are hiring also. Another thing is to think out of the box when job hunting. A nurse does not have to do floor nursing in a hospital. Most hospital have nurses doing chart audit, quality checks and other non patient care positions. You do not have to work in a hospital either. A nurse can work for insurance companies, pharmaceudical  companies, public and private schools and universities, clinics and even the government. You are a nurse, you were taught critical thinking in school, apply it now to job searching.

I saw a couple of articles on another nursing website I visit. It said that the recession is finally hitting nursing. New grads are not being snapped up and given bonuses like a few yeras ago. Nurses like me with 25 yeras of experience are being overlooked for cheaper less experienced nurses. It's a real bummer. I worked ICU in a hospital that I've done alot of agency work for. I begged the charge nurse to give me some hours.

She did, but they still cancelled me even though she needed me. the charge nurse ended up calling me and pleading with me to come in. She didn't understand why I had been cancelled. I think I know why. The minute the OA saw agency, they knee-jerk cancelled me b/c they are being told not to use agency at all.

I am feeling the crunch myself, here in CA. I am receiving Unemployment benefits, and will be going to school soon. I have applied to various jobs, like one of the nurses said, if you can hire the best, why hire a new grad LVN. This will be my newyears resolution, I will strive to be the best I can be over the next year, or two.

I am really proud that being an RN enables us to diversify. I am using my RN skills for wellness education. Recently, I became part of a group, www.newrn.com.  This is changing my life. I really have been working on becoming more holistic in nursing, and focusing more on prevention. I am glad I am able to have choices.

I am proud to at least be taking the RN entrance test this year. I am scheldule for the TEAS this month, and the California Achievement test in July. I know I will be on a waiting list once I passed both test. I am anticipating the day, to brag like most nurses here on this group forum. I hated that I didn't do the RN program sooner, If I had , I would be applying for a job with AbusyRNtoGO, I read that she is hiring  RN's, during this bad economy in California.

I have seen that the cenuses is down in our local hospital and figured that the recession was starting to hit, but all the new RN grads that graduated from the local college has not complained of not finding a job. I think nursing is strong because although people do not want to go to the hospital if they get sick enough they have to come to the hospital. I have noticed that the patients being admitted into the hospital are sicker these days by the time they get admitted into the hospital. They are waiting until the last minute to seek care. Arkansas is fine in the job market at this time.

I have just completed a Travel assignment in North Carolina. I was on this assignment 16 months total. Plenty of OT but the hospital cancled all agency Nurses and so I am in the market again. There are offers out here just  knowing how far you're willing to travel is the key to finding one.

You must be from Southern California?? Because the job market for new grad nurses is horrible in Northern California. I never could find anything. I am commuting to the next state.

Well, the HR's here in Houston are incompetent retards. There is a disconnect between nursing and HR. Nurses are needed here, but HR doesn't really see that as a priority.I have applied at one hospital 3, count it 3 times.

My frustration is palpable at this point. I have the staff ask me constantly why I don't just work for the hospital instead of agency. Of course , I then tell them that in the last 2 years, i Have applied....3 times to be exact. I'm on my third try, and I'm supposedly going to be interviewed by the ICU manager tommorow. Luckily, this woman knows me, and wants me on her staff. Cross your fingers, I went on an interview to be PRN in the ER last week, and no-one showed up. The charge nurse of ER encouraged me to try ICU. Oy-vey!

HR does not do any of the nurse hiring in the hospital I work for. Each hospital in the system has their own group of nurse recruiters. All applications are done online and the nurse recruiters do the initial interview, then the nurse manager. Once the manager decides if he/she wants to hire the nurse the nurse recruiter is notified and they set up her hospital orientation. When this is all done, the paperwork is then forwarded to HR. It works well here because the nurse recruiters are all RN's and no one in HR is a nurse. HR still hires all non nursing staff.

Jobs in CA do seem to be affected by the economy. Many hospitals are laying off and I am finding more and more resumes from hospital nurses wanting to get into home health. Still out of 40 apps I maybe gfet 2 good RN's.

I am late on this topic, but I have been an RN for 3 years. I have worked in Virginia, Washington State, and I just moved to California. I agree that there are hardly no jobs out here, I have been here since the beginning of November and I have had no luck landing a job and I have applied to numerous places. Hospitals, family planning clinics, assisted living, nursing homes. Even the agency I am going thru isn't having any luck finding me jobs. It's getting depressing and I hate the idea of working in retail or something other than the field I went to school for and am paying lots of money for in school loans.

I agree that we shouldn't limit ourselves. I have been saying I was going to take up Spanish, because living in Southern Cali there is a large Hispanic population. I have seen quite a few job postings saying they want a biligual person. I have been saying I am going to take up Spanish, I am just trying to find a non-expensive way to do it since I am unemployed right now. I will look into any free or low cost programs offered in my state. Thanks for the words of wisdom.
