I would like your opinions on what venue of nursing is the best preparation for becoming a nurse practitioner. Med/surg? ICU? Emergency? Outpatient? Home Health? Why?

When you go for the nurse practitoner program you will select the area you want. Family Nurse, Nurse Mdwife, Psych. By the time you get that far you will know what you want.

Let me clarify my question. I was wondering if working as an RN in a particular setting before applying to grad school would make a difference in how prepared I would be to function as a nurse practitioner.

I am currently finishing my Bachelors so I can start the nurse practitioner program. Honestly I am terrified. I hate to write papers and am not very good at it. Every one I turn in I just cringe waiting on the grade. I would love some encouragement from someone who knows what I am going through. I am a single 37 yr old mother with three great daughters. This college thing has changed alot since I graduated 16 yrs ago.

I worked in MedSurg the entire time that I worked on my BSN and MSN. It really helped me during the Family NP track that I took. I would take advantage of the mobility that you have as a nurse to explore different areas before you decide on a particular NP track. Hope this helps!

Oh how I remember being there! I just graduated in April with my FNP and I worked full time with husband and four kids. Not how I wanted to do it "but you gotta do what you gotta do!" I started pre-reqs for nursing when I was 30 years old. Now am 40 and finished for now unless I decide to go back for the DNP. (but not right now!)
