Posted 7 months ago I once had a male pt, in the hospital for about a week. The hospital hired around the clock private security for us. We were told to take our name badges OFF when we went in the room. He was not a prisoner, just someone that enjoyed pushing, hitting and abusing the staff. What started it all, was on his first or second day, he assaulted a female X ray tech, and than called her at home in the middle of the night, telling her that when he got out of the hospital he was going to come to her house and kill her. I also could write a book. LOL. My extensive military knowledge is not limited to just being in line at the commissary, I also have extensive military knowledge of the 'Class Six'.

Posted 7 months ago My last patient I had was legargic, and confused, she almost hit me with a bell. The last time I work at UCLA medical center, I got socked in the breast by a patient who wasn't mine, I was just helping a sitter change the patient diaper, and he was on a 2 point restraint, I guess, I wasn't fast enough. He took a swung at me, I tried to fall backwards, so the hit woundn't have seriously injured me. I survived. I am a proud mother of three beautyful daughter. I currently live in Los Angeles California. I've worked as a heathecare provider for almost 10 years. I am curently in school to pursue my MSN in nursing, and wants to work as a pediactric nurse, in public health.

Posted 7 months ago Of course I've been hit by agitated, confused patients. I've found through practicing how best to calm them down and avoid being hit, but as the summary of research says, it happens mostly when I don't have the time to work it out. My daughter had her wrist broken by a patient the first week she was an R.N. She wasn't rushing or doing anything wrong. The Alzheimer's patient just decided to twist her arm and he was very strong. You can't always prevent abuse.

Posted 7 months ago I had a confused patient try to stab me with a table knife once. I've had suicidal patients try to hit me when told they could not leave the ER (one missed the tip of my nose by a hair). I've been threatened with violence constantly. Once I was sexually harrased by a police sergeant who didn't want to do his job (he had a responsibility to escort committments to the state hospital and didn't want to do it, when I pushed, he told me I needed to get laid). I've had patients file false complaints in retaliation for not getting what they want (one accused me of calling her fat---it was actually another nurse who told her she was too heavy to lift from a car to a stretcher). Pretty much the usual answer is, "suck it up, Amy."

Posted 7 months ago Few nurses/ or staff I know, has at one time or the other been kicked, bite, cussed, snacked, knocked down, run over with power chairs..It must just go with the job. Patients are angry and take it out on the first person to cross their path...

Posted 7 months ago In home health..................old hag sicked her tacobell dog on me. I got bit, the agency <they do have policy that for ANY injury except a needle stick you have to have a drug test. Im like WTH, Im going out to the boonies for a scheduled dig level and she sicked little suzy on me and I get a drug test. I dont care about peeing in a cup.............but they told me I had to drive to the hospital 30 miles away for it immediatly. Since I was paid per visit, I missed my last 2 scheduled visits. Nobody that was scheduled was for an assessment visit and it got moved for the next day..................that's my fricken money I was mad about. Um..............she had been warned previously that she had to have the beast locked up when a nurse or therapist was going to see her for a visit. The administrator discharged her for the safety thing. I was also threatened by a diabetic who was an alcoholic that he would throw his dictionary at me for calling the md because his bs was over 500 <our accuchecks wouldnt go over 500>. Man, I miss home health! Funnest job I ever had with the exception of the dog bitting. My feelings were hurt more than my hand that got bit..............I mean I LOVE dogs..........dogs love me, how could a dog ever want to bite me? That was 5 years ago and it still makes me sad. I once had a guys open his end table drawer so I could see his gun. I got my bag, said I have to get something out of my car...............that little pontiac burned rubber flyin out of his driveway. We only have one heart, take care of it! Angie

| Posted 7 months ago I'm a psych nurse...what do you think?!?! =) After a while all the nasty comments are complements! LOL! I think as a nurse we are subject to physical, sexual and emotional abuse much more than what people may think...no wonder we have a sick and twisted sense of humor! You have to have it to stay sane! | Posted 7 months ago I WAS ALSO ABUSED BY A NURSE WHEN I WAS A CNA, SHE TOLD ME TO FEED THIS MAN , OK, IT'S IN MY JOB REQUIRMENT RIGHT? WELL THIS GUY HAD ASPERATION PROBLEMS, SHE NEW IT, I DIDN'T WELL THE MAN DIED, SHE KIDDING TOLD EVERYONE I KILLED HIM, I CRIED, FELT SO BAD, DIDN'T WORK FOR A WEEK, FROM THEN ON I WOULD READ THE PATIENTS CHART, THEN AGAIN ANOTHER ASIAN NURSE ASKED ME TO FEED THIS PERSON WHO HAD THE SAME PROBLEMS I REFUSED AND TOLD HER TO DO IT THAT I DIDN'T FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH IT, AND SORRY TO SAY THIS ,BUT AFTER THE WAY SOME NURSES TREAT THE CNA'S WHO WANT TO BECOME A NURSE CAN ACTUALLY DESTROY THEIR DESIRE. i BELIVE ALL NURSES SHOULD BE A CNA FOR A YEAR BEFORE THEY TRY TO BECOME A REAL NURSE. |

Posted 7 months ago Many patients waking up from anesthesia swing at you. we learn evasive techniques, still protecting them from themselves. Once a patient spit in my face while I was making her occupied bed!

Posted 6 months ago I have had patients spit at me, throw urine and feces, throw dirty briefs, hit, and kick, and that not counting all the verbal abuse. I think as nurses we are the targets of abuse because patients are facing difficult times and they may not know how to cope.

Posted 5 months ago Isn't every nurse abused at some point in this career field? Especially in long-term care! I have been hit, kicked, punched and slapped by patients. Most were dementia patients and really had no control of these sudden outburst! You really cant fault the patients. But the upper staff who allow abusive patients into the facility knowing very well we are not able to provide for their safety and well-being; due to financial gain should be the same one delivering direct care and not hideing in their offices on the other side of the building. Not only are we abused by patients but by their family members as well. There were a few instances where the police had to be called to get them out of the facility! There is no on site security in Long-term care! And then there is the management staff who want you to work double-shifts so they dont have to! And oh yeah don't be late for your shift tomorrow - bye!

Posted 3 months ago It's a great disservice to all of the rest of nursing to present this problem as only happening to emergency room nurses. I've only worked in an emergency room for one shift in my career (and it was an easy day), but I"ve been hit, slapped, spit on, peed on, pooped on, vomitted on, bled on, cursed out, screamed at,threatened, grabbed, had dirty needles thrown at me, been kicked, bit, mocked, belittled, insulted, etc.....None of which was fun, all of which was traumatic on some level, and none of which was reportable to anyone at all---well the hitting, kicking, and biting were, but in most hospitals, the nursing administration instantly goes to why it was the nurse's fault....because then their tails are covered.... Until nurses actually learn to take care of themselves, nursing will continue to burn newcomers out faster than they can be produced. I've been a nurse a long time, and you would not believe the number of nurses with one year of experience who look at me and ask me how in the world I stayed in nursing, because all they want already is to be OUT. Why is it that nursing isn't smart enough to solve it's own problems. It grieves me.

Posted 3 months ago I have been a nurse for 34 years, have been kicked in the back, wrist sprain, spit on,struck by family members, verbally abused,in any other profession the police would have been called.on my last job a family member picked a phone up and threw it at me,the phone broke, and I was hit with the face pllate, sustaining a bruise on my forehead and right temple area.what did my employer and office nurse's do........... the don wrote me up for not being customer friendly and threatened to fire me, I refused to sign it and she remarked How unprofessional this was the second assault ,the first time was ftom a co-worker who threatened my life, nothing was done there.Because I pursued the assault charges, the administrator told me to punch out.Nurse's are not only abused my patients also by family members,co-workers, amd administration.

| Posted 3 months ago Most of the abuse comes from either psych patients, drunk patients, patients on drugs or patients that are not cognitive. It is part of the job, and it always will be. Nurses just need to be aware of this and protect themselves. Be on the defensive when you need to be. NEVER be afraid to walk away from a patient and ask for help. FEMALE nurses-sometimes you might need a man's strength to help control a patient. WE had a a patient in the ER who was on narcotics. I was thought I could handle this guy. WRONG. He was out of control and nearly hit me, but I realized the danger of this situation and a male nurse stepped in and handled it. A dead nurse isn't much help to anyone. My best advice...try to stay alive while treating any patient. A good man loves other. A better man loves God. A great man loves God and lives well among others! I miss you daddy!

| Posted 3 months ago I too have learned the hard way. I now call hospital security, when I am in doubt. Something about having someone in a security uniform standing at your back, suddenly calms even the most drunk pt. It's like a miracle, sometimes security doesn't even to say anything, but stand there behind you. | Posted 3 months ago I work on a geriatric unit that specializes in patients 75 and older. Many are in some stage of dementia and strike out fairly often. Even though I know they do not know what they are doing most of the time, it is also very surprising when it catches you off guard. I always go into a patients room with the fact that they might lash out in the back of my mind. Most times it can be stopped and controlled. As an after thought....isn't it amazing how much strength an 80 year old woman can muster. One should study Philosophy, Archeology and History: Because

Posted 3 months ago A facility that I worked at, a 85 year old man who was in late Alz, and confined to bed (many contractures) managed to grab the wrist and break the wrist of a 'young healthy' CNA. Yes, it's amazing. My extensive military knowledge is not limited to just being in line at the commissary, I also have extensive military knowledge of the 'Class Six'.

Posted 2 months ago I've never had anyone physically abuse me, but I've been called some lovely names and treated like something they'd scrape off the bottom of their shoe. The last place I worked at, the RN treated all the caregivers like crap. She once hunted me down for ten minutes to fix a woman's bed. The blanket needed to be moved over an inch and took me two minutes to fix. Funny part is, the woman had no problem with the bed.

It is grievious to read of all the cases where nurses have been abused by others in the course of the day or in our occupation. I remember when nursing use to hold such a high standard of respect. Nurses are put in a squeeze play all the time. I am finding that even when you are compassionate and caring you can lose your job, sometimes, maybe even more so. It greatly grieves my heart to know this is the chosen field that I went into and I am being told I am too compassionate. What is up with that one? Isn't that an oxymoron? What in the world has happened to the nursing field. Anyone??? I am hard pressed to understand this whole situation we all find ourselves in today.
