Hello,

I'm an LPN student right now hoping to go back to get my RN. The speciality I'm thinking I may like a lot is pediatric nursing. Is there any pediatrics nurses out there that can give tips or anything else about being a pedes nurse??

I have been a peds nurse for about 15 years. I was a peds nurse as a LPN as well. Just apply for positions, that's how I was able to obtain my job.

I was only on the pedes floor for 3 days, and I didn't do much but I and O and getting stuff for patients, doing vitals and helping with assessments, and giving meds, I saw some nurses giving IV's and taking urine/feces samples, what else does a pedes nurse do?? Does the developmental stuff I'm learning in my pedes class apply at all to being a pedes nurse??

yup! you will need to remember most of that developmental stuff because you will need to it customize your care plans for your patients. each age group learns and reacts in different ways to their environment.

as for the duties, it depends on the needs of the patient, ie starting IV's, stool/blood collection, vitals, wounds care, assessemnts etc.

wow, sounds like an awesome job you've got there nursewah, I  only wish around here I would be able to start my career in pediatrics as an LPN but I think I have to wait to get my R. N unfortunately.  For shan, how do you remember when like they start you know like building blocks or  something like that?? That is the only hard thing in my class to remember is like when they actually start doing the different things, does it come with experience?? I remember some of it, but it is so much I don't see how any one can remember is there an easy way to remember this stuff??

Repetition- You just have to go over it and over it. It also will come with experience. Don't stress too much over it though, the more you review it the easier it is to rememnber. When I was in nursing school, peds was my hardest class and I hated it! I made the decision I would NOT EVER work in peds and here I am almost 16 years later and love it!
