Okay at my job they just hired a RN  but she chooses to work as a CNA? her ID badge actually says Nursing Assistant? She said she has 2 kids at home and doesnt want the responsibilty of a RN? I dont get it? I kick my butt trying to go to school to accomplish what she has already accomplished but she chooses to do what i do? Maybe i should just go for LPN since thats less responsibility because i would hate to go through RN school (waiting list and all) to come out and feel that its too much responsibilty and be an inactive RN like her.

Well actually a few of my classmates have mentioned this idea, not that they don't want the responsibility...

The job market for an RN, especially a new graduate, is near to none right now in San Diego, CA and many of us are really worried about finding jobs since there are so few openings. This is an option I would consider, but after I pass NCLEX I would relocate to accept work as an RN where ever I may have to go.

It does seem a little senseless to go through so much with school and then not practice the dicipline you actually earned. She is not ready yet, and maybe she never will be, but I agree with you, that is a lot to go through just to demote yourself. Perhaps after some time she will feel ready, and it's most likely a confidence thing. You put your license on the line with each nursing action you make, and maybe she's dealt with too many mistakes already, she needs more practice before she is ready is all.

Some people are just like that! I had a good friend who quit nursing to raise her kids, then years later went back - but as a Unit Secretary - didn't want the responsibility of patient care after all those years of not working.

Personally, I always sought out responsibility... In nursing it's not too hard to advance if you really want to.

Just do what your own personality and goals dictate....

I am currently a CNA in California. I finished school for RN. If I pass the NCLEX,  my work is going to give me a 30-day notice to be laid off. They can't hire me as a new grad at this time but they say once I get my CA license in the mail, I can't stay on as a CNA because I can't work at a lower scope of practice. Has anyone else heard of this?

this one is tricky. ive heard that once you are titled you can not work below your title...with this being said we have had alot of aide call offs and no coverage able to be found recently and since we do not use agency we have had nurses me included work the floor. I did however work as a stna after i passed boards bc my work was unable to train  me right away after i rec'd my license but that was only for about 3 weeks. now if your employer is going to let you go i would think that you can apply for unemployment while you are on you quest for a position bc they let you go it would be different if you would have quit.

Yes, as I have heard this is true. Things are getting better & worse, depending on the month & budget, thankfully I have been employed for a year now. If I was looking I would suggest trying to work w/ an agency since contract work can pick up under-staffed positions rather quickly.

Hiya, Gosh, it seems like doom and gloom has hit the nursing field.. I'm not exactly sure what canbe done about this , but again I wish all the states would be the same.. The entire country is in having the same problems with different answers.. I just want to wish you allluck on your future endeavors not matter what your title is... All I think that could be done is to keep trying.. Ireally hope this sturns around quickly but who knows when that will be.. God Bless you all and I wish you the very best of luck.. Keep us posted.. I see this as a change in the newer generation.  My children's generation were not challenged the way that my generation was.  When I was in high school, the only place that everyone won was Special Olympics.

I competed as an 8 yo Cub Scout, 11 yo Boy Scout, 13 yo Eagle Scout, 17 yo Sailor, 20 yo Petty Officer and 25 yo Officer.  I worked to make things better at everything that I did.  Now I even have seen sailors with a Bachelor's and Master's degree turn down a commission because they did not want the added responsibility.

On the other hand, I have heard those same people complain about their pay.

When I retired as a Commander at 42 yo (pretty good since I served 8 years enlisted), I took a job as a Director of Regulatory Affairs at a drug development company.  Because I was getting stock options, I took a cut in the base pay, so I started at $120,000, instead of the more customary $200,000 range.

THAT is what progressive responsibility will get you, not just being the one who has been there the longest.

I don't want to mix-up politics with this much, but I will on this one point, because I think that is demonstrates more than anything else I have said here could have.

The Nobel Prizes are for accomplishments, not for intention.  Everyone has some good intentions, not everyone has great accomplishments.  The low point in the Nobel history was the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize.  Our current president HAD NOT accomplished anything in any peace process, but his intentions got him the prize (as stated by the Nobel organization themselves).

HELL, I want peace.

So for a while, under my signature block, I wrote "Runner-up - 2009 Nobel Peace Prize".

People, including Nurses, need to want to make change, for the better, through many individual personal accomplishments.  Just wishing things will be better will do NOTHING AT ALL.

I completely agree with with you. What do they say the best intentions of mice and men. You are completely correct about our childrens generation... It's really pretty sad. The pedulum has to swing back and make people accountable for their futures and accomplisments. Just wanting to is not enough, but doing and completing is what shoud be the end results . I think that we have some great leadership on this site, and I think we could always learn by them. Put your best foot forward, and complete your dream. God Bless all of our members and this site. This is a great place to pick up ideas and bring up our own ideas. Just as long as we complete them and are held accountable for them.. Thank you Tom for your inspiring post..I think we can all prosper by your statement..Thank you for being our moderator and leading us in the correct way... Hugs,Teresa

I agree wih most of the post, working below you title was not allowed. Most places will let you work short staff to maintaine their budget.

I have too been applying for Assistant jobs because I have no hands on experience as LPN/RN. I used to hear that it was very difficult to enter Nursing school, then I was accepted. I used to hear the NCLEX was difficult, then I passed it for both my LPN and RN. And I was told things would be much easier after that... HA!!!! and I wish I could write in bigger font HA!!!!

I wish I wouldn't have listened to anybody when I was told not to get a job while I was attending Nursing school because it was going to make scheduling and studying difficult. I think I would have been happy as a tranporter or assistant while I was in school, just so I could secure a job for after my licensing. It's been a very rough few months. I can't get a job as either RN or LPN because I have no experience in people nursing despite the fact that I have been an Emergency Animal Techician for over 10 years, I have medical and pharmacology knowledge, triage, trauma and everything that comes with Emergency medicine. So yeah, I'm willing to accept a job as a CNA or such even if I'm an RN, just because I want to get experience and move on to further my career and education.

I completed 4 year RN program and got denied for the NCLEX RN so I applied LVN and CNA exam..i dont want to go back to school and retake anymore subjects just because i dont want to be a student anymore..i need a job as long as im working in the nursing field..my question is can I work with a LVN license and a CNA license/certificate?

your co worker probably needs more patient contact experience or lacks work experience as RN..i would do the same for the sake of income..keep in mind it isnt a waste of time to step down a ladder.....if u can apply  to a lower job title for employment why not!!!
