Many people wait a couple of months, but I dont want to wait that long. Do anyone know the shortest lenght of time to wait. I know if you start your temp license in only good for 3 months.

I started 2 months after I graduated, but that is only because that is how long it took before I got my temp license. However licensing is different here in Canada and varies from province to province. I think in general you can work for 6 months with your temp license. Almost the amount of time it takes to get the results of the CRNE... :)

Many nurses here in Louisiana said their temp license was valid for 3 months, but they were able to start work almost immediately after graduation. I'm sure they wish it was 6 months, it would give more time to prepare for the NCLEX. And they usually get their NCLEX results in 2 weeks or less.

We have to be registered to write the CRNE in order to get our temporary license. The test is only written a few times a year, so between waiting for the test and waiting for the results the temporary license can be cutting it close (depending on when you write the exam). In some provinces you can get your temporary license right away, while in others you have to have a job offer before you can apply for the temporary license. Myself, I was glad to get the exam over with.

You can apply to take the NCLEX immediately after graduation. I graduated in December '04 and took it in the first week of January '05. Then I started at the hospital in February. I would like to have started sooner but they didn't have an orientation slot open until February. Some hospitals will allow you to start orientation right away as a GN (graduate nurse) until you officially become an RN.

Our new grads typically start right away as Graduate Nurse Externs. Our 6 new grads for this summer graduated in early May, attended an Nclex review here at the hospital in Mid-May and began orientation the following week. We're 3 for 4 in passing boards so far.
For me, I took the Nclex the Tuesday after Memorial Day '99 and came to work 2 days later as an RN.

We have graduate nurse positions at my hospital as well. So if starting work right away is what you are looking for, I'm sure some hospital somewhere would be more than happy to accomodate you. I, on the other hand, am looking forward to a lengthy vacation when I graduate from nursing school next May. I can only run ragged so long, I can't wait for that break with no worries before I hit the daily grind.

i know it various from person to person i graduated in May of this year and i had a job before i graduated. the best thing i could tell you is to get a position somewhere you are interested to work at and it doesnt have to bee nursing related just to get your foot in the door. i started off in dietary while i went to nursing school and formed a working relationship with the nurses so when it came time to graduate i already had a job lined up.
