I am a retired LPN working in the HR dept of a local hospital in Virginia.  The other day I overheard one of the nurse recruiters stating that she is not hiring anymore graduate nurses, until further notice, due to the doctors not wanting to work with inexperienced grads.??!!

Being in a dire nursing shortage, I can't see how the hospital can justify this and I am wondering if anyone else has heard of such a policy ?

Wouldn't this be considered some sort of a  discrimination tactic?

I have not heard of this in our area.  I have heard that our hospital is becoming more cautious about new grads.  They feel that some of the new grads coming into the field don't have the clinical experience.  We are a teaching hospital and so maybe the doctors are more understanding because of the high number of interns.  I think that it comes back to the same old same old... if you don't have experience you can't get a job and you can't get a job to have the experience.

I would say "good luck" trying to fill your spots without hiring any new grads.  We all know that experienced nurses are just knocking at your doors.  To those physicians I'd say "ever heard of a resident?"  Way scarier than a new grad, mainly because the difference between the two is that a new grad nurse actually realizes that they don't know anything.

RNdude, you are so right as new nurses we know that we don't know and we have support system in plce with seasoned RN's if we use it and admit that we don't know.  Too often our pride gets in the way and we are afraid that we will look stupid if we ask questions.  In nursing we never will know it all it is always a learning experience.~~~
