Right now there are more than 2000 CRNA jobs open; how come more RN's do not become CRNA's?  What is the preceived greatest stumbling block?

I'm an OR nurse, so I work closely with CRNA's all the time.  Bottom line for me is I'm simply not interested in being one.

No stumbling blocks.  I just have no desire to do that job.  It would bore the crap out of me.

Thanks for the replies; response:

CRNA boring:  it can be boring when all you are doing is long cases in stable patients but how about CABGs when you are working intimately with the surgeon and perfusionists to modify your anesthestic during these challenging cases; or doing an epidural on a laboring woman and she could not be more thankful when you have taken away her pain; or helping to successfully resuscitate a young person who has been shot

The Liability is low because in most settings the surgeon, anesthesiologist and hospital share the liability with you and their pockets are much deeper.

You have an advance practice and great autonomy; so you can intervene for your patient without constantly needing a Doctor's order.

Finally, money is not everything but new CRNA grads at our facility sart at $175000

I WOULD BE BORED OUT OF MY MIND, I AM A ER NUSRE AND I LIKE THE AUTONOMY I HAVE IN THIS SITUATION AND THE DRAMA...NO.. MONEY ISN'T EVERYTHING. I DO NOT BLAME RN'S FOR GOING AFTER THE MONEY, BUT I JUST PERSONALLY COULD NOT DO THAT BORING JOB ALL DAY....I HAD CONSIDERED IT AT ONE TIME!!!! JUST NOT FOR ME...SAME WITH ICU...I AM A ER NURSE, LEVEL 1 TRAMA CENTER AND THAT IS MY PASSION. NOW WHY DIDN'T I GO TO MEDICAL SCHOOL??? STUPID I GUESS...

I WENT TO SINCLAIR COMMUNITY COLLEGE AND CAPITAL UNIVERSITY IN THE LATE 1980'S AND EARLY 1990'S. LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU FELLOW NURSING STUDENTS.

Geesh, I hope this is a typo, because that would mean  a new CRNA in NC makes more than some anesthesiologists.

i think this is great for someone who wants to do that job.Like I said, I personally would be bored stiff. Majority of cases are smooth sailing and boring...Just not for me, I think money is what attracts people into that career, and I bet many regret it...What do you think? I too would not want that responsibilty on me, if I did I would have for sure gone to medical school and made the 450,000.00 instead of the 175,000.00 ...I find it hard to believe that figure as well, but if you say it is so, it must be so...What is the catch??? There is always a catch to above average pay, and 175,000.00 is way above the average pay for a CRNA...

According to salary.com CRNA's do make about $175,000 a year. I have been attracted to this job not only because of the pay but because the schooling is shorter than going to med school. For me this is the best bet with a husband in the Army and a 6 yr old and 7 month old. I alos want to become a midwife, I dont know how those two career fields would go hand in hand however I want to keep my options open.

I am an aspiring CRNA. The main thing that attracted me to anesthesia was the autonomy and the flexible work schedule. Not to mention an endless fascination with anesthesia.

My mentor was a CRNA......I have no interest in being a CRNA.  I like the variety that working with pt's throws at you....starting IV's, inserting foley's, drawing labs, pt teaching, Never a boring moment, and sometimes don't do the same things twice for months.....My husband keeps trying to talk me into going back to school for CRNA, NO NO NO, and hell no.  I shadowed endoscopy a few months back, and it bored me to tears.  I could barely do the 8 hour shadowing, I can't imagine working with unconscious pt's all the time (LOL, although occasionally I do wish I could have a specific pt out of it for the shift )

I'd always heard it was majorly competitive to get into CRNA schools. Supposedly only the cream of the crop(people with GPA's 3.75 and above) get in. This was in Louisiana. I did have a friend of mine go back and get her CRNA. She had to work a year in ICU before she could start. She did graduate, but I can only imagine the stress she must have been under. She had developed a drug habit not too long after getting out of school.

I'm not saying CRNA school did this, but I remeber how hard she worked to get in.

Im interested in becoming a CRNA and was looking for someone of a mentor. Someone out there who is a CRNA who I can discuss information regarding the process and a good place to start.
