I know some people who think that it doesn't matter what sex you are, because we are all nurses doing the same job. What do you think?

I think that is true for the most part, but some times in a hospital setting patients will not let a male nurse or female nurse work on them, I think it is usually a religious preference though. I had this problem in some of the nursing homes I worked at patients did not let male nurses or aids near them.

I think that is usually true, except when culture is different like sandramae40 said. Muslim women are not aloud to have other men touch them and it is against their religion or something. Other than those circumstances, I have never seen a difference.

I think that is true unless the patient requests otherwise. I've seen some little old ladies who refused a male nurse.

I think a lot of the older population expect to see a female nurse. They are not yet comfortable with the idea. They also have a hard time seeing a women as a doctor. I have worked with male nurses and some of them get teased relentlessly by their female co-workers often times inappropriately.

There's an ad on this web site that I find interesting: Male CNA wanted. I don't think I've ever seen that before. I 'm guessing they want a male to assist with the lifting of patients and such??

I guess it goes to show although we have made a lot of changes in the stereotypical thinking of yesterday, we still have situations where gender does matter to certain people. In those instances we have to honor the patients choice as much as possible.

I tell my patients that I am a wife and mother and nothing can embarrass me anymore! It usually breaks the ice. I've never had anyone refuse my care both as a RN or as a NP. I guess I've been lucky.
