I am a nursing student, and I am researching the  benefits of a rectal temp vs axillary for a pediatric unit at a hospital. I understand rectal is the most accurate, but isn't there a greater risk of trauma to the rectum vs axillary? Please give me some pointers, advice, or knowlege on this subject.

Personally I like the new temporal thermometers.  They are accurate, quick and completely non invasive.  I always choose axillary  because it is non invasive and far less traumatic than rectal.  I always use a digital thermometer if a temporal thermometer is not available.  Another reason I choose axillary is children, even babies will be far more cooperative having a thermometer in the arm pit than in their rectum.

<----------------Fred doesn't like rectal temps.   You know how much it hurts when a 100 pound dog climb up my arm to get up around my neck like an ebola monkey?

The policy regarding temps in pediatric pts at our facility does not even address rectal temps as an option anymore.  The hospital does not stock rectal thermometers.

I wouldn't be surprised if rectal thermometers were limited to the ED for core temps in the near future. They'll always have that purpose, I reckon.'

Not here.  We can do continuous rectal probe temp monitoring through our Philips monitors if needed, but that's it.  It's temporal, axillary or nothing otherwise.

We use temporal or tympanic thermometers.

tympanic is what we usually use in the ER.  If we want a super accurate temp on someone real sick we use a rectal thermometer.  Ouch!

I find tympanic not as effective because not everyones ear is the same size and depending on the person using it and their skills...they might have the right path to the ear drum.

My problems with temporal...IDK its hard to say Ive used a temporal thermometer on a person I know is not 97.6 on the tempal but  registering 105.9 axillary, 102.3 behind the ear and 101.6 on the forhead. What do you believe?

Rectal temp with an actual rectal thermometer was 103.7.....??? Clueless

I like a rectal temp better because of its accuracy
