What is it with grumpy old David Letterman lately? His liberal leaning is so blatantly obvious recently. His  nasty jabs at Sarah Palin are not funny and are just mean spirited. Is he that afraid of her? jeez dude, your man won the election.....let it go.

Anyone else have an opinion on this?

I hadn't even heard about this until this morning when I was watching the news while getting ready for work.  They played the reel of his show and his nasty remarks.  I understand this guy is supossed to be a comedian, but seriously.....when is everyone gonna let this whole thing with Palins daughter getting pregnant pass?  She is not the first unmarried young lady to be in this situation, she surely will not be the last.  Why is there an automatic assumption that because her mother is a public figure that she will somehow never make bad decisions? (meaning premarital sex or unprotected sex) She's human, like the rest of us.  I applaud her for keeping her child and not aborting.  It would have been very easy for her to "erase the problem", and no one would have known, but instead she stepped up to the plate.  I'm sure this has much to do with the values and principals her mother has instilled in her.  Way to go, Sarah!   I wonder what kind of jokes and negativity there would have been if she would have decided to abort her child.  That would have been picked apart too, even by the abortion lovers.  Some people just can't win.  I love Sarah and hope she runs again for the white house!

Maybe he is trying to keep his ratings up since Conan O'Brian is now his competition????  I don't know....it seems everyone has been picking on Sarah Palin lately...her interview with Matt Lauer was a little tense as well.

Well stated. Why do we have to constantly find fault with others. It would seem to me that it's just to make us feel better about oour own selves. This was just cruel to be said about someone who followed through on her vindictions and the fact that she was taught the right thing to do. Too bad everyone does not have those convictions.  I love the Palin family!!!

The daughter he was talking about 'getting pregnant by one of the ballplayers' was her 14 yr old daughter.  Who on this planet thinks its funny making fun of the daughter of a republican as the brunt of statutary rape?   Wait..............I bet Obama and his cronies do.    Let Letterman rethink this when his kid gets older.  They would be just sorry Dr Tillman was shot recently.   BTW, with all his cash looks like he could get that gap between his 2 front teeth fixed.

Not only did he make sexist (and false) remarks about Sarah's wardrobe, but he joked about the rape of her 14 year old daughter! He is sick and needs to be taken off the air. If it was a republican that made similar comments about a Lib or minority the program wouldnt have lasted another day! (Oh wait, that DID happen, and they DIDNT last another day!) The worst part about it is that, instead of apologizing, he made up excuses as to why he wasnt completely in the wrong. These liberals have NO accountability!

Letterman has finally apologized and admitted that it was a bad joke, and a bad thing to say........big deal, it was already on the air and out there for everyone to hear. Since when is it alright to do something so wrong and then afterward apologize for it? I am sure if no one made a big deal of it, Letterman would not have apologized. I saw today that some advertisers pulled their ads from his show and the CBS websites. So Letterman probably apologized because the money men told him to.  I do not know why everyone is against Sarah Palin, she has only made one mistake since being on the ticket. That was running as the vice presidental candadate instead of the presidental candadate.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> PALIN 2012

Yes Letterman was very wrong and he wasn't funny.  He has now seriously apologized.  Now for the other  guys.  While we're at it let's take Hannity, Limbaugh, O'Reilly and Beck off too.  They are the 4 horseman of the Apocolypse.  Their God is Greed and the worship at the alter of money and ego.  Simply question the information they put forth on the radio, TV everyday.  Go to the impartial fact checking websites and see if they are more truth or lies.  It might be a revelation to all of you.  By the way I've recently lived in Alaska, go to mudflats.net if you want some of the real information about Palin in Alaska and how absent she is from Juneau and who she has appointed to positions in her state government etc.  She is dangerous and not ready for the national or world stage .  Not even in 4 years, 8 years etc.

I never said Letterman should be taken off the air. I do not think anyone should be taken off the air for what they say on their shows. I think that if you go to the impartial fact checking websites you will see that most of the so called news show hosts, both conservative and liberal get a lot of facts wrong. I think it is done on purpose. It is a ratings ploy. The bigger the controversy, the bigger the ratings. Letterman apologized but his ratings still went up.

As for the Palin 2012 remark, well she can not be as dangerous as the tax and spend man we have in there now. Billions for bailouts and yet he wants to cut the military. The people who protect us and our interests. With all the terrorism and unrest in the world, we should be keeping a strong military. Now that is dangerous.

The daughter Letterman was talking about was Bristol Palin, not Willow.  Remember her?  The one who was pregnant during the campaign, unmarried, underage, supposedly full of high morals and ethics, who now is on the cover of People magazine, saying it was not the wisest choice in her young life?   She put herself out there and is a public figure, therefore fair game to comics.  It was a tasteless joke and in poor judgment, but it was not about the 14 year old.  Everyone can say what they wish about President and Mrs Obama and not much is said here or anywhere.  Shoe's on the other foot now isn't it?

Hannity, Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Beck... Take them off too?

Okay, let's have an actual quote from one of them that you think should get them taken off. Maybe they have made tasteless jokes, but I never heard one during the times I have listened to them.

By the way, I'm not saying Letterman should be fired - I only want a real example of something one of the conservative hosts has said that is equally tasteless...

AND I am NOT a Republican, and don't care for Limbaugh at all - but specifically what have any of the named hosts said that is "horrible?"

First of all, he didn't mention her daughter by name, he simply referred to her as "her daughter", so there is no evidence that he WASN'T referring to the youngest Palin girl. Regardless, it was a disgusting joke, and the terminology "knocked up" is tasteless.

Oh, and the named conservatives are TALK SHOW hosts, and have never claimed to be newsmen. Their shows are advertised as commentary. If they were news shows, then yes, they should stay neutral. But they are paid to express opinion.

And yes, Letterman is a comedian, and I used to watch him a lot - but it is definitely in poor taste to joke about a teenager being knocked up by a sports figure.

Good for you, Kayty2339! I have the utmost respect for anyone who research their opinions to back it up! I never heard those quotes, and yes, if accurate, they are very inappropriate.

I would only disagree about the "News" thing. I think anyone with any intelligence knows that Rush (et al) is a talk show host with a personal opinion... Perhaps there are tjose who are misled to believe he is "reporting the news."

Let me explain my own background - I grew up in the 60's - the "liberals" and "radicals" at that time screamed about "freedom of speech," but if someone who disagreed with them spoke on campus they threw rocks and shouted them out.

These are the same scum who spat on us and criticized me for being a "baby killer" when I returned home from overseas. In my objective opinion the :"Liberals" have been much less tolerant than the "conservatines" thru the years. But that's just my opinion....

I believe EVERYONE should be free to express their opinion - not just those who agree with me.

Letterman's joke was sleazy - I would think that if it was about the Obama children or about Chelsea Clinton years ago. I am consistent and fair.

Ever heard of Bernie Ward?  He's the famous liberal Californian talk radio host, often compared to Rush Limbaugh....besides the fact that he is outspokenly liberal, he differs from Limbaugh because he is now serving 7 years in a fedeal prison on child pornography charges.

These are all quotes from liberal democrats.  I could go on and on.  We could spend a lifetime quoting liberals and conservatives who have said the most ridiculous, offensive things.  The bottom line is that Letterman made a bad judgement call, period.  Whether he is liberal or or conservative, who cares, he acted an ass that evening.   It's time to let this thing with Palins daughter go.  God forbid Obamas daughters ever wind up in a similar situation....oh wait....they won't be "punished" with a baby as long as their dad has anything to say about it.

I beg to differ with you dmazement. Letterman said that Sarah Palin's daughter got pregnant by A-Rod during the game. Sarah's 14 year old daughter Willow was at the game, Bristol was not. No matter how Letterman and his people try to spin it, he was talking about the daughter at the game. Come on now, how can anyone think he meant Bristol.

Why do I believe this?  Because he said so in his apology and also stated it was tasteless and a poor joke.  Sorry, but I don't think Letterman or anyone else would ever condon statuatory rape.  Those who jumped on the band wagon over this all assumed he meant the 14 year old girl.  Assumptions are something every nurse is taught to ignore, yet everyone makes assumptions, guesses and comes to incorrect and erroneous conclusions.

It is not an assumption. Willow was the daughter at the game. How can A-Rod get the Bristol pregnant in the 7th inning as Letterman stated, if Bristol was not at the game.  He meant the daughter at the game, and his apology came only after advertisers started pulling their adds from CBS shows and CBS websites. You said that assumptions are something every nurse is taught to ignore, well nurses are also taught critical thinking. It  is not an assumption to know that someone who is not at the game can not get pregnant by someone who is at the game. So how can he honestly say he was talking about someone who was not there.

Well , this just goes to show, that whoever wrote the joke for Letterman, did not do his homework. Besides, regardless of whom he was speaking of, either way it was disgusting and wrong!

Why is it Don Imus paid dearly for his nasty remarks, yet Letterman is still on the air? Agian, the hypocrisy makes me wan to hurl.

One of the many things I found interesting about Letterman's Joke....if you want to call it that, is the fact that he had a child out of wedlock.  I believe it was a few years after the child was born that he got married to his girlfriend.  Why would he even want to touch that joke is beyond me.  I especially don't see the humor when the girl is under age.   I give her a lot of credit for having the child!!

BRAVO NURSE JOHN!!!   Hey, howdy Dmazment, hadnt seen you on here in ages,Didnt recognize you!  Lol.  John, I'm so glad it was somebody besides me to point out that if you watched the clip, he was refering to the daughter that was at the game.................hence.............the one who was pregnant during the campaign wasnt the one talked about.     I keep wondring why the liberal media love trying to make jokes about Sarah Pailin.........I truly they they fear her.  She represents something good and honest................and Im sure everybody knows for those who like to throw up that she was busted for tax evasion or some sort of nonpayment.   Well, sorry to tell all of the Pailin haters she was cleared 100% of the charges.    I feel Sarah Pailin would not hesitate to take up for the protesters in Iran........for the Women who were fighting as much as the men.   Obaba hasnt the spine to take for for oppressed women.   I have written a couple of emails to Sarah Pailin trying to through the thought of not only suing Letterman but the network as well for violation of her civil rights...........and her daughter's civil rights.   I wish others would do the same.  People think nothing of making tastless jokes about the young women..........teenagers that are sexist.  Im sure everyone on this link has rules at the workforce that well defines sexual harassment.   Nobody in this country respects the rights of teenage girls regarding sexual harrasment.   Nothing will ever make things better unless huge amounts of calls and emails to our congressmen and senators.   I know there is our freedom of speech............but what about freedome of our children from sexual harrassment?   I think Letterman needs to be fired and sued along with the network.   People think we're all so stupid, especially Obamanites...........they dont realize we can put 2 and 2 together and we know that 'hey, thats not the daughter that had the baby, it was the other one".    They dont realize that all of the world saw Obama bow to the king of Saudi Arabia..........he wasnt squatting because he was a short dude............it was a Bow.............the whole world knows what we saw.    Um........did everybody also see the VP and Sec of State rebuke Obama for no action over the supreme ruler in Iran?   Go Biden!   Good work.

Hey guys how are you all doing?  THose of us who have been on this site long enough remember the posts that came with all the political forums. People got nasty and mean. 3 topics we all need to be careful of on these kinds of sites are race, religion and politics. Yes, we all have freedom of speech, BUT we are on the web, we do not know each other and we do not know all the people who read these posts. Topics like this get heated very quickly and words are said out of frustration and anger.  We are supposed to be professional nurses, some here are student nurses. We are supposed to be caring and compassionate, not hit men and women. I would hate to see any of us travel down the same roads of destruction when politics were discussed many months ago. PLease share your views and opinions, please do not put down or become rude and nasty to your fellow nurses.  PS people on TV and news are paid very well to stir up emotions and controversy, that raises there ratings.  Keep things in perspective please.

Just a reminder to please keep the forums a safe and civil place for everyone. If NursingLink staff feel a topic has gotten out of control, we will close that particular forum thread. Thank you!

Katie, I do not believe that this forum has gotten out of control. Everyone has voiced their opinion of a public statement made by a public figure. Everyone has been civil in their treatment of one another even though there has been disagreement. I personally never felt anyone who disagreed with me was being uncivil towards me. I also feel I was civil with everyone else. As long as we do not get into name calling and such, healthy disagreement and discussion is always welcome.

Liberal, conservative, Republican or Democrat, it doesn't matter. The joke was wrong regardless of who said it or whom it was about. He should have had the good sense to refuse to do that joke if it wasn't his own idea, and the decency not to come up with with something like that if it was his idea. But with that being said I also believe the media were like sharks circling bleeding prey with this story. It never should have happened, but the way it was handled wasn't right, either.
