I don't want to be a nurse anymore. What options do I have?

Hi. If you don't mind my asking, what are your reasons? I am not a nurse nor a student in training yet. I want to change my career from working in the office environment to the nursing field.

I've been a nurse in a hospital and office setting for almost 20 years. I'm burned out due to overwork, low pay, no recognition. The typical.

Take a blow off class like liturture, philosophy, western religions or political ecomomics, anthropology, geology is great one. Then you can use them as electives later. Anyway me too, I got a twitch in my right eye lid.
TODAY I am fixing up my resume and applying for teaching medical termonology or any other class they will hire a BSN for. I took one of those tests to help you decide what career you should get into. Well I should be in healthcare managment, outside, writting and teaching. Just great, I thought I should be a scientist or walmart greeter.

me too-after 27 yrs. in nursing-I'm tired. Seeing all these young nurses wanting to be Florence Nightingale-do mission work and field nursing makes me feel old! I'd like to do something that has absolutely nothing to do with nursing.

I know how you feel. I started out as a nurse because I enjoyed caring for the patient, what happened? We have somehow let our patients go by the wayside, paperwork/paperwork/paperwork! I know we have to document, but most institutions treat RNs like slaves. There is low pay, no appreciation or gratitude! Some days it seems like I am a glorified baby sitter, refereeing between subordinates and interdepartmental. I started out as a C.N.A., went to L.P.N. school and then R.N. school. I have been in this field for 23 years, and it only gets worse. I live in the southeast, and it seems choices are limited, nursing homes, hospitals, ALF/SCALF, hospice - all have the same problems, no staffing, no money and no effective management. I am also SICK of taking call!

Sdibend - why not try forensic nursing? Can anyone share their experiences about forensic nursing? I am 38 yrs old and ready to take a crack at nursing by making a direct impact on people like the patients. If I am not cut out for nursing then, I suppose I would appreciate going back to working for the City as primarily administrative support - NOT! The City gives out cost of living raises even at a maxed out salary like mine but it balances out after medical and dental benefits go up each year. So, basically I never really see a raise. A nurse's salary looks pretty promising here in Northern California but I am also after the rewards of serving as a nurse. I hope to make this career change last until I retire. Good luck in trying to make some changes in your career to make you happier... There's nothing wrong with stirring up the pot for a little excitement.

sdibened, I'm out of nursing, making more money working from home then I have ever dreamed of...........and it's recruiting. Here's a website you may wish to check out http://www.healthcareeragents.com No commuting, I'm self employed, no doctors, no hospital administrators. The only downside is it really takes about three months to start making money, but if you plan right, you can work part time on weekends and build your business during the work week.
