Posted 7 months ago We recenly published an article about a man who took a unique route to becoming a nurse. First he was a sailor, then a police officer and then an engineer! He just recently graduted and became a nurse. Check out the article here. What did you do before you got into nursing (or nursing school)? Did you previous jobs have any affect on your nursing career? |

| Posted 7 months ago When I graduated, I went immediately into nursing school because of lack of funds. There were no loans @ the time. I wanted to do somethng in medical. For many years I have been a Realtor. I am in the Million Dollar Club. Have had many interesting jobs in nursing. I believe the patience I have in nursing helped in my RE career. I only work 2 shifts/wk nursing and refer in RE. Butterfly Lady 10 |

| Posted 7 months ago I had just finished a bachelors program in business administration with a management concentration when I graduated and couldn't find a job. My older sister ( who was a pediatrician) talked me into trying my hand at nursing school. Within the first semester, I was hooked and then realized that this was what I was meant to do for my career. Looking back over 25 years, I still have the same passion for this job as when I first started. |

| Posted 7 months ago I worked in optometry/ophthalmology for 22 years, 1996 became a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant. I went to school not because I hated my job but because I wanted to enhance my knowledge. I miss ophthalmology - it was my passion to help older people! I will have my BSN at the end of this year, yet I press on seeking more education with the hope I will find my passion again... |

| Posted 7 months ago I was an architect! I got sick of everyone being so self-serving. They preached family values and community service, but I could never see how they had either when they worked until 10pm every night, never saw their families and hardly did anything for the community. I thought there were more important things in life than that. Not to mention, after all that time, I just didn't have the passion for it anymore. At least not enough to work that hard for people I didn't respect. I still am a designer at heart, but I mostly design and make my own clothes and use my talents toward making my home beautiful. I'm happy knowing I'm working to help people, so my design projects are just for fun now. I think it's the perfect balance.

| Posted 6 months ago Worked as Harley Davidson mechanic (owned my own Harley shop for a while), machinist, truck driver, and a NM Board of Veterinary Medicine-certified farrier, Certification #910 (horseshoer). I did not go to nursing school until I was 28. Went to nursing school on the GI Bill after being in the Marines from 1968-1971. Been a pro or semi-pro musician (bass guitar, rhythm guitar) since I was 14 and wish that is how I could make a GOOD living. Alas it is not to be it seems. Oh yeah, 2 seasons as a hot shot crew member with the Larimer County (CO) Yellowjackets forest fire crew. Talk about long days. Eh, Cpt. Eric? |

| Posted 6 months ago It's intersting to hear so many different backgrounds and how we lead to the medical field. I am not an RN yet, but going into the program in the fall. I am actually a Director in the wonderful corporate world. However, after being affected by the economy and being laid off from a previous company, it made me really reflect what I wanted to do with my life and not just be content, even though the money is good. I always knew I wanted to be in the med field and after much time and thought, life always pulled me in the RN world. I hope to be successful and live up to the success I plan myself having! Thanks, Dan |

| Posted 5 months ago I worked for a furniture company for 18 years. I started as a laborer in the sanding department and quickly made my way up to management. I was the first Woman supervisor in the history of the 150 year old company. We made high end quality furniture. Unfortunately the economy and imports pulled us down and the owners were forced into bankrupcy. 200 employees lost there jobs and were offered a grant to retrain in any field we wanted. I chose the medical field because in the 18 years that I worked in the factory I was always on the first aid team and took pride in the care and safety of my employees. When everyone was running from an accident, I was running to it with my medical bag. All my friends and co-workers said I should go into nursing because I was so good at what I did. So I went to school and became a Registered Medical Assistant. It's a start and I hope to continue my studies and become an RN someday. prior to that I was a waitress for 11 years and also worked in a casket factory for a year. I know GROSS. |
