I was just reading someone's comment earlier and they said that male nurses get paid more than women. This really surprised me, as it certainly doesn't work this way where I come from ie New Zealand. Has anybody out there come across this?

I believe there is some truth to this in the U.S., but another factor is that men are attracted to some of the most skilled and intensive units that thrive on stress and excitement: ER, ICU, CCU, Flight nursing, etc. Those areas typically pay more because of the skills demanded and the high burnout rate.

I am from Indiana, and as far as I know, male and female nurses get paid just the same. I don't think gender has anything to do with your pay, or at least it shouldn't!

The following is pasted from a study by the AFL-CIO Department for Professional Employees (DPE) :

Overall, the study finds that women in professional and related occupations earn 27 percent less than their male counterparts.

Female elementary and middle school teachers earned more than 10 percent less than similarly employed men, despite comprising 82 percent of the field.
Female registered nurses earned nearly 10 percent less than their male colleagues, despite the fact that 90 percent of nurses are women.
Female physicians and surgeons earned a whopping 38 percent less than their male counterparts.
Female college and university teachers earned more than 25 percent less than those who were male.
Female lawyers earned 30 percent less than male lawyers.

I know that in Michigan, women make .75 cents to the male dollar for all professions, so I doubt the pay discrepancy is only limited to nursing :(

Reference Monique's post above. Also, you have to note that the labor statistics used make NO distinction between RN, APRN, and CRNA. If you consider that the numbers skew higher to income for CRNAs and percentage of males as CRNAs, that adds a dimension to the discussion. No other profession has MORE gender parity in pay than nursing. A female RN in the same area of the country with the same amount of experience and training working in the same clinical area will make the same money as a male RN, I suspect - no matter what persons with an agenda may wish to claim. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of most other professions. Where there is a significant difference is in management: men tend to be promoted into nursing management faster and move farther in management than women do. Part of this is attributable to the fact that many men come into nursing as a second career and have existing supervisory experience - but not all of the disparity can be explained by this rationale. I don't believe it is fair, either - but if the battle is to be fought, the right battle must be fought - fuzzy facts and selective statistics will help neither gender parity nor nursing as a whole.
