Well I'm not entirely sure if she's got a point, but even if she does, is it valid? Who is this lady to you you? a stranger? does she know your situation? is she even a nurse? Sorry to bombard you with questions but NO, I don't think you should give up, especially if it's based on one person's judgemental comment. You will know if it's time to give up, the feeling will be overwhelming, but it sounds like you've still got some drive towards building your education and future, so don't let anyone strip you of the motivation you have!

Prereqs are important, but it only took me two years, and at a community college the only thing I had to pay for were the books (in CA the BOG fee waver) which they might not have anymore since we're in the pits. But plan out your options if your going back to school...you can probably find a transfer program in your area, so you don't spend too much $ on classes, and hopefully you will qualify for financial aid.

Remember: it's your life so you get to make your own choices...and hopefully you will know what's really right for you!

Hi Trina,

Ignore the idiot.Look in the mirror and tell yourself that you can do this and then go do it ONE DAY AT A TIME.

I don't know a darn thing about nursing and I will be starting classes in the Fall myself. The only thing I am sure of is that I can complete the curriculum as well or better than others before me.I bet you will do as well as anyone as long as you study and then study some more.

Good luck !

I graduated high school in 1984 and decided in January to go back to school to pursue something I had been dreaming about for 25yrs but just didn't have the confidence in myself to do.  I am my second semester and my second math class.  I started at the bottom and am working my way to the top.  I feel you can do anything you set you mind to.  Don't give up if this is something you want to do, then go back and tell the person how do they know that nursing is not for you, they are not you!  I have been married for 25yrs and have two sons 23 and 14 and I'm going for it and nothing is holding me back.  I'm working full time and going to school for now but I'm sure eventually I will have to change the work status.  You can do all things, but you must first try.

Trina,

When I went to nursing school we had to fight dinosaurs just to get there. But I discovered, as a former Marine and being a little older, that it is a common technique used by nursing instructors to tell their students that they will fail.

The idea behind that is to weed out those who give up easily. And think about it - if someone telling you that makes you cave, what will happen when the going gets tough?

I agree with BigBuck - do not listen to this person. And think to yourself "When the going gets tough, the tough get going".

One of my advisors told me that I should change my major because my grades would never be good enough to make it into the nursing program. Her "advice" made me work that much harder.  I start nursing school next week and all my hard work payed off.  Don't listen to those that try to discourage you from doing something that you really want to do.  Only you can decide for yourself if being a nurse is really what you want.  If you do want it, then do it!  You'll make it if you believe in your self and work really hard.  Good luck!

Don't ever let anyone hold you down or back from attaining your dreams.  Use that as an extra push to keep on fighting and do that much better.  You can do this and it will be that much sweeter once you reach your goa!

Oh Boy I hear you girl...

I'm on the same page except this is my first yr of college. My older brother and I got into a huge huge fight over nursing . But no matter how many people say you cant doit  tell them to go away If you have the heart, mind set and passion u can get through it . I have a.d.d. so studyin for me is really hard specially since ive been outa school 4 three yrs trust me i understand alot of nursing/college students are on the same page only thing i can offer to you in advice with studyin is this: if you have a laptop take notes on it. its easier and faster with typing then the old school pen and paper. remember if your not enjoyin these pre reqs u have to keep trying and studyin once you ace these classes ur one step closer to becoming a nurse and that one step is jus round the corner. oh maybe if u do flash cards that may help too

I went back to school after a 16 yr absence. I have had a few people say to me "Why are you pursuing that?".....If I had $$$$ for everytime someone told me I "can't " I'd be pretty rich! Nursing is my passion.....It is what I have wanted to do since I was a little girl...I was a HS drop out & a teen mom....and with all I went through I never gave up on making my dream a reality someday.....I have just completed my first year in June and have just passed my NCLEX-LPN. Nursing school is rigorous and consists of hard work, but you CAN & WILL do it!!!!!  Don't give up!!!!

Wow, what a sad topic.  If this is what you choose to do then just go for it, always have a plan B, if you do not get into the program.  I don't know what the deal is with College's these days, to try and rid you out of history classes and these bone head ones, but stick to whatever you want and just ignore all the crap...

I did not begin my college career until age 31. Before that, I did not have the confidence to do it! I had thought about nursing back in high school, but was told that you have to be good at math. (I'm NOT) I had never even made it past pre-algebra! So as a married mother of two, I knew it was going to be hard to juggle but I just signed up and started chipping away at the prereqs. I could only take 1-2 classes per semester so it has taken me two years to get them done, but I did it! Only then could I get on the waiting list, which I did. After a year and a half (they told me it would be two years on the waitlist) I will be starting the nursing program soon!!!!! My husband and I have been trying to pay off bills and scale back our expenses, because I know I can't work much during this next two years. It's not over yet, but I know I'll do it and my guess is that you can too! I always got bad grades in HS, but as an adult I've gotten almost all A's. I actually look forward to going to class because it is my own thing, just for me. Do it!

Hello, I think you are feeling the same way we all do at some point in our lives.
We hear something negative and then start to doubt ourselves in the process.I think
you should GO FOR IT and start believing that you are a smart individual with as much
potential as the rest of us and do the hard work it takes and just see what happens.
I have had this happen so much in my life and it only makes me work harder for what I
want. I hope this helps!! Stay Strong and take one day at a time:)

You have received many great advice with this topic. The only thing I want to add is you'll come against people who will deter you from your educational/career goals.  Stay strong in the midst of negativity.  Learn to deal with it at school and you'll be able to deal with it as a nurse.
