Sometimes you come across negative press about nurses (nurses in jail, abusing patients, etc) and not only does it make me very sad, but it also makes me wonder if we deserve the negative press. Does the negative out-weigh the positive? Nurses are the largest group of healthcare providers in the world! It's a shame that the actions of a few make us all look bad.

What do you ladies and gentlemen think? What is the best way to combat the bad press? And should news organizations report on these kinds of scandals?

I think it is ok to report on "bad" nursing, but I never see good articles about nurses who are doing a great job.  The bad publicity affects every aspect of nursing and if there were good articles out there then the public could see both sides of the nursing field and would be better informed.  Too much negativity causes people to look for the scandal and something to go wrong.  It makes a nurse very nervous to do their job and this can cause more mistakes.

I had a long talk with a Catholic priest about this once, about how both our professions suffer the black eyes from the acts of a few individuals. It is not fair, but when a nurse, priest, or cop does something amoral it is considered sensational news.

Maybe it does not seem that we get enough credit, but I can promise you there are many people walking around today that were saved by nurses.  Nurses always show up at the top of the list whenever surveys are done regarding who people think have the highest integrity.

Be proud to be a nurse! We are loved and respected. We matter and we do make a difference.

The best way to combat the negative is to be a good nurse and protect the integrity of nursing as an individual.

Could not have agreed more Walt. Nursing is admired by the majority of the public.

It is not just the negative press about things that nurses really do, but nurses are usually portrayed badly in books and movies. They are either uncaring, mean or sluts. Yes there is probably a small portion of nurses like that, but the vast majority are not.
