Madatory geriatrics training

Posted 4 months ago I don't know about anyone else, but when I was in clincials (both for BSN and NP), I never had a required geriatrics rotation. I had peds and obs, but geriatrics was an optional elective rotation. I didn't do it - but now I wish I had. Do y'all think a geriatic rotation should be madatory? Or was it mandatory for you? Even if you don't work with the elderly all the time, I think it's incredibly important to know how to care for them - you wouldn't treat a child the same way you would treat an adult - why would you treat an 80-year old woman the same way you'd treat a 30-year old man? Thoughts? |

| Posted 4 months ago Yes, it should be mandatory. In my school we did a rotation in a nursing home. The population is aging, and more and more nurses will be needed in Long Term Care and Assisted Living (which are my specialties) in the coming years. There are certainly many differences in care of the elderly, but nurses must also be educated to treat them the same as younger people in many circumstances - for example to not "talk down" to them. I've seen some nurses and aides address competent elderly residents as though they are speaking to small children. |

| Posted about 1 month ago Geriatric is the first round of clinicals in our nursing program (San Diego). Then Women's Health, Pediatrics and I forget the 4th one. I agree that it should be required. |
