I do not feel that God called me to be a nurse. I do believe that becoming a nurse is what introduced me to God. When I became a nurse I was not really a believer in God. Since I became a nurse I have seen so many miracle recoveries from hopeless cases that I knew there had to be a higher power behind it all.

You are not crazy Tina, I think that God did call you to be a nurse just as I feel nursing introduced me to God.

I don't mean this to be rude at all, Just giving the honest opinion you asked for so please don't take it that way.

I think that if Gods plan for you is to be a nurse than it will happen for you. Don't give up on applying just because you didn't get in the first time. So if it really is "meant to be" it will happen, if not, well than you know. I didn't think that way until after I became a nurse.

I continue to struggle everyday with a variation of that question myself.  Is it God's will or my own that I am seeking to fulfill?  My current thought is that if you are interested in bringing Him glory (our purpose as Christians), then whatever you seek to do will be His will.  That might seem preposterous to some, however, if you are truly seeking His pleasure, you would not pursue unGodly activity.  With regard to closing doors, don't forget that everyone has free will and is not subject to Him.  He won't (although He could) control people to fulfill His purposes.  So, if you can glorify Him by being a nurse, don't let others (who may or may not be Christians) living outside His will prevent you from doing so.  Reflect carefully upon why you want to become a nurse and go from there.  The closing doors may simply be a consequence of your past decisions and will simply have to be overcome with time and effort and is in no way a reflection of God's approval or disapproval of your goal.

Keep on praying!  I know I personally don't do enough, so do some for me and yourself.  Thanks for the thought provoker.

Great post John.   I have always been a christian, its only lately that I finally was saved.  Its like being ignorant for 40+ years.  Its like the lights are on.  I know I wouldnt have made it through school without Gods help.  I wouldnt have gotten the certifications I have without God.  I've always had this dream....................but it came from somewhere.

A true nurse at heart always have the caring heart. We have, to me the most difficult yet rewarding job ever.

Most of the time, we tend to set aside ourselves just to give way to our patients, not everyone can do that. It takes a lot of sacrifices on the nurse's part to do such thing, yet we survive each day, knowing yes, we have made a difference again in the lives of others. That to me is a special gift given by Him, that we help Him nurture the lives that  He entrusted to us.

And so to me nursing is really a calling, you can't stay in this profession forever when your heart is not into it, because basically nursing needs a big heart to accomodate all that there is into this noble profession.

THANKS JSILVOY.

WELL IT JUST SEEMS THAT WHEN I TELL PEOPLE THAT I FEEL THAT GOD HAS CALLED ME TO BE A NURSE THEY GET THIS BEWILDERED LOOK (THE DEER IN THE HEADLAMPS LOOK) LIKE THEY CANNOT BELIEVE WHAT THEY JUST HEARD. MAYBE THINKING "SHE'S NOT IN THIS FOR THE MONEY." OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. WELL WE (AS NURSING STUDENTS AND NURSES) KNOW WE CAN MAKE GOOD MONEY BUT, I THINK IT IS MORE THAN THAT FOR A LOT OF US. ME PERSONALLY I REALLY DO NOT CARE/WORRY ABOUT MONEY GOD HAS ALWAYS PROVIDED FOR ME THE MONEY I HAVE NEEDED IN SOME FORM OR ANOTHER.

I FEEL IF I REALLY DON'T DESPRETLY NEED IT THEN I WILL NEVER GET THE MONEY BUT, IF THE OPPOSITE IT TRUE THEN THE MONEY COMES.(I DON'T KNOW IF I MADE THAT CLEAR OR NOT.THAT WAS THE BEST WAY I COULD PHRASE IT.)

With all due respect; if God called you to be a nurse and it hasn't happened yet; keep praying, listening and forging ahead.  Other people's (including my own) opinions seem irrelevant.  Following someone elses advice rather than His guidance would seem to be more of a hinderance of your obedience to Him.  That is the danger of opening this topic up and asking for opinions, it can cause us to question whether or not God's guidance is actually real.  It can interfere in our relationship to God if we are seeking validation from others, and they disagree or challenge the authenticity of our claim .  The Bible makes it clear that if we are faithful to God, we will be known as peculiar people.  Knowing that right up front helps me to understand why I get the "deer in the headlights" look, or why the secular population thinks I'm a freak when I speak about a "personal relationship" with God.

I am not challenging your faith in God or putting you down.  I can totally identify because God's voice is sometimes so quiet, I can't clearly hear Him either.  I want to encourage you to listen carefully, trust what He is telling you, and follow through. I don't want to interfere in your relationship by telling you what I think He is saying to you.  What I do know is that when we act on what He tells us, it's a win win situation.  I know that it also says that faith without works is dead.   I pray that you reap the continued blessings and serenity that results from following Him.

i do hope that you get into nursing.... just ask and pray to GOD....and once you get into nursing ( as a student) dont ever forget to thank Him and rely on him to guide you...

sometimes, you feel it honestly inside you that its your faith to be a nurse, when i started college, i was a literature major, and some told me to take up nursing but i felt indifferent but somehow, quite curious of nursing, but then i shifted to nursing and i honestly couldnt see myself working hard for another course other than nursing, but there were times, during my time as a student nurse, i didnt love nursing already...but i continued coz its something i need to do ( finish my schooling) and ask for GOD's help to help me pass difficult subjects and now im done with nursing,,, and i honestly believe GOD wants this for me... if you have the chance to get into a nursing school, then give it a shot and always ask for GOD's blessings & help...only our almighty GOD can do goodness to you without anything selfish in it and will help you accomplish and reach your dreams, i honestly do believe that. thats all i can say from my experience and i do hope it helps you in my own way....

Personally I believe that it is a calling to become a Nurse.  Some people (patients) often call Nurses "Angels on Earth".  It takes alot of will power and drive and a need to heal people and be by their side at the worse times in their lives.  Not just any average Joe can do that.  Being that I am a Christian I do believe that God gives us direction of where to go in our lives, he has directed me to become the kind of person that I am.  I feel in  my heart that I have a responsibility and desire to be the person that offers compassion and healing to people that really need it.  God made me a compassionate, caring, sympathetic person with a desire to learn and be educated.  That almost by definition is a Nurse, and God made me that way.

I believe some of us are called to be nurses by God.  Others just find a way into the field.  You have to know God in order to realize he is calling you into the medical field.  You are NOT crazy by any means.  Just keep prayering and things will work out the way they are supposed to work out.

You may not believe now but you will one day. Every knee shall bow and Every tongue shall confess that he is lord. I wish you would just try God and just develop a relationship with him.

God speaks but few listen. As God opens doors He expects you to go through them. but stop for a minute and ask yourself  if it is the title of being a nurse that you seek or the chance to serve in the healing professions. God does not see things as we do. I believe  he calls us to serve. I believe  He calls us to use the talents and skills we have to help those in need. To be there at His appointed time, to be His hands and do for others, what they can not do, so that they can heal. God Bless you as you serve.

I've known many people who believed they were "called by God" to do this or that, but none meant hearing an actual voice. They just felt that God was guiding them.

I too have questioned this and came to firm understanding that God does call people into the medical profession and into nursing.  There are those people that get into the profession for the wrong reason (money, steady job, etc.).  I heard a voice in my head that said "be a nurse, be a nurse" for many years.  I denied that voice and actually planned to go to school to be a psychiatrist, but each time it was time to enroll in school I would get sick and put in the hospital.  Finally I decided that I should not be a psychiatrist and started doing other jobs.  I jump from job to job until I got laid off and was collecting unemployment.  During the unemployment interview I stated that I might want to go to school.  The lady gave me a brochure, and I didn't read it for a couple of months.  When I finally read it I saw that the government would pay for me to become a LPN, so I prayed that night "ok, God if it is really you that has been telling me to be a nurse then tomorrow when I go on my interview I will get hired on the spot no matter what".   The next day I went on my interview and really didn't have "my best foot forward" so-to-speak.  I told the woman.........................."that salary is unexceptable...............what I will take is this,  those hours are unexceptable................what I will work is this, and I might go back to school".   She then said "you are hired".     (Also I was applying for a cooking store and told the lady that I didn't even like to cook that I microwaved everything.)  Then I said "well, I am going back to school", and did so.

The point to my story is that NO ONE can tell you what you should do.  You have to go with your Gut and that little voice in your head that tells you what to do.  You have to go with what you feel, and what you KNOW  deep inside of you.  That is how God speaks to us.  He speaks to our beings..........way down deep.  It isn't just a fleeting thought, but more of a nagging sensation that you just have to do it or you just might BURST!    God may not want you to be nurse at this moment in your life, but might want you to do something in the medical profession and then work your way up to going to nursing school.  We are the sum of all of our experiences and God may want you to experience more to better round you to make an AWSOME nurse when you do become one, and you  will be able to help others with your story and guide them to make their dreams come true.  Don't ever give up!!!!!!!!!!!!    If God wants you to be a nurse then GOD WILL MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!    One thing that you must remember is that God's time is not our time and he will do it when and only when he is ready (and when he knows you are ready too).

Take care and God Bless!

i do believe that GOD called me to be a nurse... now i am an rn.. with our almighty GOD's grace...for without GOD's grace i wouldnt pass.. im not bragging but im just sharng... i replied to this discussion 7 months ago...i became an rn, just days ago... but the road i took wasnt easy... there were times, i do feel its all difficult and complicated.. but all i did was move on, no matter how painful the stuff i was going through whether be it about nursin or personal life.. sometimes though the road you have to take to be who you want to  be will confuse you, and sometimes, will make you think if you are meant to take that road.. but in the end. you'll just know, coz  our almighty GOD will lead you and that you'll just find yourself in that road..and that you'll know it in your heart. you just have to give yourself several try... and lots of prayers to our almighty GOD for guidance & help... i hope somehow, this helps...

I am going to be honest to say that God called me a long time ago and I was too darn lazy to accept the calling on my life. I have tried several positions in the business world...anything from an Accountant, a Network Engineer, and a Human Resource Generalist...all of which was behind the scenes and I was more that capable of doing, but I could flourish and be the woman that God called me to be. I was always told that I was too caring and too outgoing and had many haters. I am really bright and I have a genuine love for people and cared about them and their health.

It struck me like a bolt of lightening that this was my true calling when my grandmother got sick with leukemia and lost her mind in Alzheimer's Disease. My grandmother never went into a nursing home. Between me, my mom, and my aunts we made sure that she got all of the care she needed until she transitioned. I remember the times she would look up and say thank you for helping me to her cussing me out when she was sundowining. LOL! I had tolerance for it all because one day I got it in my head like a prophecy that I would have to get old and that someone would have to possibly take care of me when I'm sick. That's why I am patient with anyone who is sick and needs my help. I know that my life operates a lot easier when I am operating in my annointing and walking in God's perfect will for my life. Yes, I am called to be a nurse.

I do not believe in 'coincidence' but rather, an event or series of events where God is acting anonymously. If you are called to be a nurse as I was (and also as Florence N. was), then the events that will make this possible will fall into place in your pathway.  From the time I was about 10 years old, I have wanted to be a nurse and everything to make it possible fell into place-right down to the money from the state for tuition and fees/books for my 2 year program.

Also, if you pay attention and watch for the 'roadsigns' along the way you will find that you are being led through your life and career. I have been blessed with many diverse opportunities to learn in different disciplines/specialties that my resume' is now 2 pages long!  Remember that God finally had to throw down a burning bush to get Moses' attention?  Makes you wonder what Moses 'missed' along the way?

Nothing happens by chance or by accident. Science and Religion CAN and DO exist together. Remember that Darwin was a theology student before becoming an explorer. He never denied the existence of God in evolution and neither do I.  However I am sorry for those who never open their minds/hearts to God because they miss a lot of love and peace.

Best of 'luck' to you!

hello collegemom,  Plz dont give up in anything you FEEL is a purpose that has called to you. You my not think right now its going your way but every direction of the path your on has a meaning, a purpose. I too had this calling and became a RN with my 4 children and failing marriage and not to mention, very little help from family and friends. Which i can smile and say, I did it-with the blessings and guidance of God. I look back and ask myself why, how and do i continue. My calling was during my hospital stay recovering from one of my many surgeries and many different nurses that took care of me. my experience was more discouraging then encouraging but that was the calling. It was the purpose, my purpose of wanting to make a difference. When i take care of my pts or their families in time of need and they thank me. I stop them and say they are the reason i am here. I take into me my experience on the other end of the stretcher and make the difference i wanst able to when i was ill. tho you may feel you are not on your path cuz is not as direct as u may like. Only God knows the lives you touch just by sharing with all of us your struggle or determination to make yourself better for the betterment of others. Who knows, maybe the job your in now is meant for a reason. You may be working with someone that has the calling and you are meant to be there, at that job, in that moment of time to be the "push" some else may need. Keep going, follow your dream, your calling if not for you for the sake of other you will and can make a difference for the better.  God Bless and good luck. Keep in mind nursing is one of the most thankless yet most rewarding jobs if your purpose is honest and true.   I wish you all the best.

I know that God called me into this profession. I have been allowed to see Him and His Glory through miracles that man though were impossible. I have found that man's extremeties are God's opportunity to work.
