It is not important what others think about how you feel or what you believe. The only opinion that matters about being called to Nursing by God is you.

I am not sure if you are stating that you were turned down for Nursing School or a Nursing Job. If it is a job, the market is tight right now and many people are struggling. If you have a job as a  med lab tech today, does not mean that this is your final destiny.

It is not possible for us to tell you what God's plans are. Often we must struggle and over come many stumbling blocks before reaching our goal. If you believe that it is God's plan for you to become a Nurse, then you must go through these trials and over come them either on your own or with the help of others. Try not to admonish yourself for not achieving a goal soon than you had wished.

Take time to reflect on your will verses God's.

Yes, without a question. Your heart has to receive it though with true compassion.

I do believe that our Lord had plans for me to be a nurse and that is why I am one today.

Evidently, each and every one of us has a calling in life, whatever it may be the seed was implanted by our God long before we were aware of it.  Having said that, I realized my calling 35yrs. plus ago and I'm still as excited for this beloved nursing career of mine.  Moreover, I thank God for giving me the determination, and the perserverance to help those in their time of need.

It might be possible. I don't feel I was called in anyway, but I know I was given His reassurance through school, and even as I was about to give up He kept me going.

Now I'm working at a max security prison so I know I am doing divine work as a nurse!

I believe God gifts us all differently and gives us our unique dreams, visions, and goals. It takes very special people to care for others. Not everyone has the caring ability. Knowing where we fit as nurses is also a unique gift. Not all nursing is alike. Some are mental health nurses, some are oncology nurses, some help deliver babies. Our giftings are different even in the realm of nursing.

And as far as the devil. I think that was a joke comment, but seriously, I don't give any credit to the devil or negative influence.

Every individual is on a path of completion. The careers we choose is to bring us to total fulfillment. Some may call it God's direction or the path of destiny. What you did not disclose was why you think "God" wanted you to be a nurse.  Nursing is having the passion to care for others, to help them to come to the wholeness through healing. It is in healing others that one finds healing in self. You may not have a physical ailment to be cured, but what else inside of you that needs to be cured?

I had a very good paying job about 2 1/2 years ago.  I heard rumors the whole fifteen years I worked there that they were going to close the place.  At any rate a year before I actually got laid off (2 1/2 years ago)  I told my oldest daughter that if I got laid off I was going back to school to become a nurse.  I was nearly 50 at the time and she looked at me like I was a freak.  Truth be told I know that God planted it in my heart because he knew that a year later I would get laid off.  He has helped me through so far and I know he will help me get through the rest of it.  He has a plan for me, though I don't know all of it yet I do trust Him.  I took care of both of my parents before they passed away.  I think He knows I can do it and He will prepare me for it.

Yes, God does call us to nursing. But, His call will come to you through people, places and things. You have to be willing to accept this call when it comes because all of the doors will open for you. On your path to becoming a nurse, you will go through beautiful hills and rainy, dark valleys. When God seems to have closed the door on you, just look around, you will see that God has left a window open for you to climb out of and your path is visable ahead. Never loose your faith...you will be tested, believe me. But when you are standing with your class to receive your cap and nursing pin, you will know the ups and downs of your path was worth it.

So, look forward and never back. Only look back if you have learned something on your path to becoming a nurse. I wish you the best. If you ever need to chat...I am here for you.

Yours in Nursing, Susy

Yes.  I believe nursing is a calling.  I've had this discussion a lot over the years with peers.  Those that become a nurse for money, or security, don't stay at it very long.  Once a patients spirit is crushed by statistics you can literally see the beginning of the end in their eyes.  The spirit needs a dose of Hope scheduled and prn.  Eastern medicine combines mind, spirit, body in their care.  3000 years can't be all wrong.

I'm sure if someone feels that they were called, that might be true.  I don't especially feel there was a divine influence in my decision.

"Devine Influence" is a good way to put it, RNdude. It seems that we are all pulled toward certain venues. I like to think of My Calling in terms of something the Romans said which goes something like: "The Fates lead those who will. Those who won't they drag".

grandma795, I do think there is a plan for us all. I'd love to think that this is a call from God. Who knows why we do as we do. As long as it is done with the best intentions, then I think it is a path for all... Teresa
