MedSurg is so different from Basics, my instructors say the whole point of MedSurg is "knowing what the nurse will do". Even as the semester is dwindling down Im still having a hard time with this concept. For those of you who have had MedSurg or taking it now what trick/methods are you using to understand the concepts you are learning.

Med-Surg was tough, esp when trying to transition your brain to think differently (critically). Just remember that every body system works together to function properly. Link one to the other. You are trying to look for signs and symptoms and what you would do when they arise. The only thing I can say is to study and not just read the material. Literally sit down and read until you understand what is being read. It took me a few times each chapter when I had Med-Surg. Have your notes written to how you understand because the book is very lengthy and hard sometimes.

thanks for the advice ctrum6414, i just took exam 4 in MedSurg today and I went in there feeling i knew the material came out not so sure. I taught i knew all the test, clinical manifestations, nursing interventions and then its like they threw me a curve ball. Im just praying I do well on it. I will start reading to understand not just to pass. Wow so you went back and reread each chapter, I wish I could do that, actually sitting and reading the chapter once is taking me forever. Thanks for the advice.

I had to go back and reread cuz it was difficult to put into terms I understood. Praying is another way to help with Med-Surg!!

To get through MED-SURG you really have to utilize your pathophysiology and to keep it simple think of a body like an a car even though a lot of people don't know much about cars, then you have to remember the car is like the body if one thing falls off or breaks, then that affects something else.

I've started studying for the final its in two weeks time. I was talking to some semester 4 students at my school because they are doing MEDSURG 2 right now, its even more difficult!

@ Tamela: I was studying the patho and some students do that too, but the teachers told us MEDSURG is not about patho, that MEDSURG is all about "what will the nurse do for the patient". But to me its hard to know what to do if you dont understand the disease process. So basically you just focused on the patho?

MEDSURG can be even more challenging with a terrible instructor. One thing that helps is that when you have your patients, don't be afraid to touch them or ask them quetions. They are good sources of information and the new grad too, they do things the right way for a little while. Too bad students get paired up with the "experienced" nurses who use a lot of short cuts. Good luck, and keep studying.
