Posted almost 4 years ago I am a Home Care Nurse caring for a child with a rare skin disorder. She has active and colonized MRSA and Pseudomonis. 80% of her body is bandaged, and her skin wounds commonly drain green, yellow, fouls smelling drainage. Her mom's new "whim" is to get a hot tub and have the Nurses soak in it with her for an hour or so every day. This will soothe her itcht tender skin, and she'll be entertained. My question is: How at risk are the Nurses for catching the infections? What if I nick myself shaving my legs that morning. Am really worried about this. Please advise! |

| Posted almost 4 years ago If the mom wants you in the hot tub with her daughter, it is time to leave home health, or get another nurse to take care of her. STAY OUT OF THE TUB John L. Racher RN, BSN, MSRN-BC

| Posted almost 4 years ago I assume it's possible to catch this from a hot tub soak with the "child". Something about this whole situation seems a little inky to me... parents of children in home health do not always know what is best nor do they consider the risk for their care takers. I would alert your agency to the mother's latest whim, so that another nurse isn't asked to be put at risk and under no circumstances would I get in the tub with the child. If the mother thinks it's a good idea let the mother get in with her and you can stand by and supervise in case there is an emergency getting in the tub is not neccessary to provide security if the mother is in the tub it's not like a pool she could easily pulled out if there was a problem. Is soaking in a hot tub really a good idea anyway for her open wounds? (nursing student but it doesn't seem like a valid plan of action for healing them up and could reintroduce infection to open wounds.) When in doubt about anything being infectious it is ALWAYS best to assume that it is infectious rather then put yourself at risk, you can't care for anyone if you are sick yourself. |

| Posted almost 4 years ago PLEASE! STAY OUT OF THE HOTTUB! Not only is it dangerous for your health, I dont think the chlorine is good for the childs wounds. Have the mother speak with her Pediatrician or specialist about this before she does this. And definately notify your employer of the mothers desire to have nurses join in the hot tub, to protect the other nurses that may care for the child. |
