| Posted over 3 years ago Suzy, I hear you there. I left California because the high hourly wage was still not enough to meet the cost of living. Oh, I was doing OK until I wanted to buy a house. But housing costs were so insane (this was at the peak of the housing bubble) that I knew I could never afford to buy. Wages here in North Carolina are much lower, and the working conditions not as good. But none of my graduates have had trouble finding a job, and I was finally able to afford to buy a house. :) I'm sure there are still plenty of places like that. I also think things will get better in a a year or so when the economy finishes recovering. |

| Posted over 3 years ago Theala.. Gratz on your house! :) As a former resident of SoCal, I agree with all you said... To further illustrate, I live in a town of about 1500. My daughter is in a class with 2 teachers, 4 paras, and thirty students. Her school is 4 blocks away and she can walk if she chooses in complete safety. I rent a 2800 sq ft house with a fenced backyard and garage, can have my pets, and my rent and TOTAL utilities amount to less than $500/month. I leave my doors unlocked, walk to the park and the library, and work, which is only 3 blocks away. A gallon of gas is $2.65. A gallon of milk is $2.50 and a dozen eggs are $0.89 at the grocery... or $1.50 for whole, fresh milk or $0.50 for free-range eggs that saw the chicken just this morning, from a local farmer. :) And as a new LPN grad (July 30) with only 2 years previous CNA experience under my belt, I'm making about $14.50/hour on average (shift and weekend differentials). I realize the small-town life isn't for everyone, but for new grads looking for experience and a good start on student loans, I agree with you: look to smaller communities in rural and agricultural areas. You might be (pleasantly) surprised.

Mama... There are lots of towns just like it in this region... Feel free to email me privately, if you like, and I'd be happy to send you some links to facilities in similar towns around here that might be looking for staff, as well as the ones that were at my career fair (and I know none of our recent grads live in a couple of those areas). ~ No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted ~ |

well...if you'd peeked @ my profile, you'd see I'm a BSN My first choice was working at the VA hospital here, where both of my friends were hired just this past year. They no longer have any openings. I've also sent my resume to the local Naval hospital for civilian positions, but unfortunately they've run out of new grad openings. Now I'm doing flu shots part time for the next two months, and I'm hoping I can find something soon after that. I'm considering any place at this point that is hiring RNs, I've applied with correctional facilities, unfortunately none of the LTACs are hiring RNs regardless of experience, then I even sent an app to the VA up in Sacramento. If I were to go back and do it all again from the beginning, I think it may of been in my favor to have joined the military. -Angela--'--,--{@ |

| Posted over 3 years ago I'm in San Diego. I graduated in Dec. 08. I can not for the life of me find a New Grad RN job at the hospitals here. I don't want to move!!! My husband works here and can't give up his job for me to find a job in another state. This situation is ridiculous, and I'm sick of explaining to people that I can't find a Nursing Job when there's a "Nursing Shortage". Uuug! Has anyone in SD found New Grad positions recently? Or know of anyone who hires New Graduates?
Thanks!

| Posted over 3 years ago I graduated as a RN in June and took the NCLEX in July and passed. Received my license for the state of New Jersey and then applied for my license for the state of New York as well. Went to school in NJ but live in NY. I just got hired last week for a position at a NY hospital near my home. Very near, like 5 minutes!! I'm very excited. It did take a few months, but when it's your time, it will come around. Think positive. Good luck to all you new grads looking for work. You'll get a job, don't worry. |

| Posted over 3 years ago I live in Duluth, Mn. The 2 hospitals here have been on a hiring freeze for over a year. The starting pay for an RN in this area is $27/hr which is very good for this area. I am an LPN, in my last semester of the RN program and would have loved to get hired on at the hospital as soon as I graduated. I do not see that happening for a while. I am lucky to have an LPN job that will allow me to become an RN doing nearly the same job, with more pay. I am working at an alcohol and drug treatment facility. I am lucky to know that I will have an RN job in this tough economy. Many are not so lucky. My advice to people is to look outside the box in getting a job. Don't fret about hospitals not hiring get a job that will be able to show experience on your resume, or lead to advancement. In my area there are the not so typical nursing jobs such as the jail, plasma centers, blood banks, telephone triage, alcohol and drug treatment places. I by far do not do the tasks that you think of a nurse doing, but I am a nurse, and I am getting some good experience. I always follow the websites for the two hospitals here, and at a point they were not even hiring experienced nurses...lately they have been slowly but surely starting to hire back again, not new grads, but at least they are starting to hire again. So lets all cross our fingers and hope we get our dream jobs soon! |

I must admit I am considering this more and more each day...and it sounds very appealing to know I will have a reliable job. This new vaccine nurse job didn't give me work this week, so I've only done two days so far. I am so tired of relying on my unemployment benefits. I have to say I am a little reluctant to join only bc it's new and seems a little scary, but each day sounds better and worth it. -Angela--'--,--{@ |

| Posted over 3 years ago I am a recent grad from Massachusetts and there are NO jobs here either. I work in the emergency room at the hospital affiliated with the school I went to and have been there over a year and a half and I can't even get a job there. It is soo.... frustrating to sit on this computer for so long looking around for jobs. I have been looking in other states and it seems as though they are all having the same issues with new grads. Does anyone know of "rural" areas that may be hiring? |

| Posted over 3 years ago Hello fellow nurses. I understand all your frustrations....especially the new grads. Be flexible and move if you need to. The big cities are cutting back so move to small/rural areas if you really want a job. I left Sacramento, CA and moved to Jackson, TN to attend an accelerated BSN program, finished Dec 2008 and could not get a job in Sacramento. I decided to stay and work in TN, I had so many job offerings in Med Surg, L&D, ER, ICU, Peds, OR. The pay was a little lower than California, but they offered me loan repayment with no contract, sign on bonus, flexible schedule, money to buy scrubs/supplies. I was in school with a friend from Sacramento but she left TN after graduation, she just found a job and started working in October. Please don't get discourage, move temporary where the jobs are and leave once you have experience. Also, if you are willing to move, try and get a compact license so it will be easier to transition once you get a job. Don't let the job hunting experience rob you of your passion for wanting to be a NURSE... |

| Posted over 3 years ago I took my RN boards in August 09 and got a job in September 09. I am a Private Duty Nurse and Love my client, the only thing I dont like is I have to drive 1.5hrs to work. But that is by choice, I could of moved to the small town my client lives or closer to my client, (am moving back to des moines iowa so daughter can be back in school she likes) but when we moved in with my parents to assist my mom in caring for my dad after he was diagnosed with leukemia i promised my daughter we would move back to Des Moines when I was no longer needed at parents. (dad now in remission) I am lucky though, since only care for one client the company doesn't have to pay mileage but they choose to pay all there staff mileage if they have to drive more than 30 miles to a client, so after 60 miles round trip we get paid for mileage. which for me comes to approximately $50/day on my pay check for mileage. that money i put into a separate account to pay for gas, oil changes, tires ect. basically for car maintenance since driving so much. I learned that from my sister-in-law who used to be a home care nurse (she had multiple clients) and I recommend that anyone who gets paid for mileage to put that money in separate account for car repairs, oil changes and so forth. guess what I am saying is be willing to relocate or to drive a ways when you are looking for a position. | Posted over 3 years ago That's what I told the agency I applied to. She said that all the new grads are having this problem, even RN with BSN's. She advised me to try to get into a hospital, I told her, I have, but no hospital will hire me, without a year experience, and she said that all the agencies are like that. I said to myself, I better use my LVN now, try to get into a hospital, and hold it down, until I complete my BSN degree, if not, I will be in the same boat with my RN license. I live in Los Angeles California, I cannot live on a CNA salary, $12.00 hrly and time in a half, working perdiem, is not enough, especially if you have to pay for gas, inflated food cost and rent/bills/car.etc. I work part-time now, I get $204.00 biweekly in unemployment benefits, and plus, I don't have use my gas to go to work. That works for me, until I find a good LVN job. God Bless everyone in this same boat!!! I am a proud mother of three beautyful daughter. I currently live in Los Angeles California. I've worked as a heathecare provider for almost 10 years. I am curently in school to pursue my MSN in nursing, and wants to work as a pediactric nurse, in public health. |

| Posted over 3 years ago cuttie, good luck finding something. I've heard things are terrible in California right now; I am so glad I got out when I did. My area has been pretty weird. One month they're not hiring new grads, next month they are. They can't make up their minds. |

| Posted over 3 years ago Thanks everyone, it is difficult. I have applied to many LVN positions, and keep getting NO_ NO_, you have to have one year experience. I applied to Providence Healthcare, they said that they do have a new grad program, but you have to catch them when they have an opening. Now I have a profile on their website, they will keep me posted, when they start up again. They start all their new grad LVN's on their sub-acute floor. Just receive my Continue education booklet, here in California, all the license nurses receive one, when they are about to renew their license, great!!!, its that time again, I have not even used my license yet. | Posted over 3 years ago I graduated this past Dec 2009 and I would say that the only thing that saved me was the fact that I worked in the hospital as a clinical assisant and so had built up my resume with them and so was able to get a grad job right away. I know that most of the people in my graduating class ( 22) have not found jobs and were looking long before graduation. This is a very economically poor area and so health care is the best bet for you to get a job but the field has been flooded over the past few years with grads and no one moving on or retiring. If you are young and are not tied down with family and house then I guess you go where the work is. I feel for everyone who has gone through the hard work of nursing school and then don't see the rewards. Keep your chin up and make some friends in the hospitals of your choice. They are the ones who who first who is leaving and who is retiring and bad as it may seem sometimes is is about "who you know" Good Luck Our service to others is the rent we pay while here on earth!! |

| Posted over 3 years ago I'm definitely having the same frustration!!!! I passed my NCLEX, have my PA RN license and am awaiting approval for my Florida license. I've probably applied to 100 jobs in the Fort Lauderdale area. I am relocating from PA because where I come from there aren't any jobs either. I need my FL license asap but I went ahead and got ACLS and PALS certified just to get an edge over some of the other applicants. I really don't want to look outside of a hospital setting as a new grad because I feel it is career suicide. I know I'll probably get offers for med/surg floors on the night shift and nothing else but at this point I just want to start my career already. Every person I talk to tells me to go online and apply, which is all I seem to do these days. I feel all new grads pain in the hunt for a job, stay positive, they need us they just can't afford us right at this moment. We have to stay strong and not let the system pigeon hole us into a career choice that may jeopardize our future plans Relocating to Florida is a very big mistake. Been there and done that when the economy was good. The economy is bottom of the barrel in Florida. I still have family down there. My neice bought a house 5 years ago for 240,000 and now the house is worth 2/3, now they have to mow the neighbors abandoned house to keep the snakes from coming into her yard plus pay for a mortgage on a titanic of house on less income. She is a teacher there, and had to take a pay cut or get laid off. No property taxes in florida mean, no tax base for education. I can tell you as bad as you think the economy is here in PA, it's 10X worse in Florida. There are plenty of areas here in Pennsylvania that are hiring new grads. Taking a job outside of a hospital is not career suicide, its called experience. When I graduated in Florida during a 'good' economy I had to take a night shift position on the worst unit in a hospital. Eventually, I tried LTC, for several years. I had no trouble getting back into a hospital for employment. |

| Posted over 3 years ago Just an idea here, and I know relocation is not for everyone, but in Northeast Ohio new grads and others are not having any trouble finding jobs. We just hired 5 new grads on my unit and other units in the hospital are hiring also. The Cleveland, Akron, Canton area have a lot of jobs John L. Racher RN, BSN, MSRN-BC

| Posted over 2 years ago Hi Ladies and Gentlemen,
I graduated in January of this year. I had worked part time for a major hospital all through my nursing school and thought that was a foot in the door. It took 8 months for me to even get a single interview. I've since had 2 more... yes, THREE interviews in nine months. I have sent out 123 resumes. I had previous healthcare experience as a CNA and MA. My grades and GPA were excellent. However... the thing I keep being told is, "we are going with someone who has more experience." As someone else said, how on earth can you get experience if no one will give you any? I've applied to schools, to LTC, to suburbs, inner-city, everywhere... I am beginning to fear I will become less marketable the further away I get from my graduation date. I cannot afford to go back to school, my debt is piling up from the loans I took to go to school already. I have applied even in places like Arizona, Texas, small southern states... I stopped applying outside because I cannot afford to move anymore. My savings are nearly obliterated. I've asked for volunteer opportunities and I can't even get that. Boston Medical Ctr just laid off 44 nurses. I do not see a single ray of hope. |

it's like u don't know anymore what to do in this career. For us with families here/kids, you can't move out of the state!
