Posted over 5 years ago HI, I am a nursing student here in Hampton Roads area of VA. I had a LPN who has been a nurse for about 15 yrs tell me that new RN's only start out at about $18 per hour here in the VA Beach/Norfolk/Chesapeake area hospitals, but I have had others tell me that the new grads start off at about $21/$22 per hour in the hospitals. I am currently working full time and going to school. I am expected to gradute in April of 2009 from my AAS program. Do the local hoispitals offer tuition assistance/sign on bonus' to new grads? What is the starting pay in this area? |

| Posted over 5 years ago I am not really sure. Go on Payscale.com and they will give you a better idea of the payscale for your area. As far as tuition reimbursement and other benefits I would suggest you contact the HR at your local hospitals or go online to see what benefits they offer. |

| Posted over 5 years ago tried that already, but i keep getting conflicting info. i even went to the states cite, but my area hasnt supplied their statistical info. all of the information on payscale, salary.com and the other search engines only have info for northern virginia/richmond area. none of the ads in the paper gives this info and sentara's network told me if depends and would not give me a range... |

| Posted over 5 years ago I looked on Payscale and I put in RN at a hospital it came back with an average pay of 19.09 for a new grad. So maybe the information you received was correct. What is the cost of living like in VA? |

| Posted over 5 years ago Cost of living is high here, but it depends on the area just how high. I live near Charlottesville and UVa and our hospitals start around $20-21/hour. I had the best luck just calling the HR department at the hospitals I was interested in. |

| Posted over 5 years ago A fruit for thought too, is when you get closer to graduation many area hospitals hold dinners that offer you a chance to ask questions such as pay scale, benefits etc. Many hospitals here in Upstate do this and i can't attest to your area but this is something that you can also ask. Or another suggestion like another mate here offered is just call the HR department and ask what their starting wage is for new GN's. Usually they have a scale for those who are GN's to one year post licensing and increase with each year licensed.

| Posted over 5 years ago That pay sounds about right for a new grad. |
