I feel that these Nursing TV shows like Nurse Jackie, HawthoRNe and Mercy make it seem as Nurses are Doctors maids? One nurse said he apply to Med school couldn't go unfortunetely he had to do nursing; as if he need an exscue to explain why he's a nusre? and i am always hearing the term " your just a nurse." on these shows as if nurses have no saying in anything? Besides the TV shows i got into it  in reality with someone in school who told me that nursing is a good start before going to med school. I explained that my plan was to only be a nurse maybe nurse practitioner in future. She said why waste my time studying to change diapers and bathe patients all day. Doctors are prestigious  and get paid  way more than a nurses and np's. Plus i was upset that a friend of mine told me that nursing should not require college im not studyin to be a dr. and  that nurses are doctors maids? Go to Med School!  why spend time and $ for someone (dr.) to tell me what to do all day? On top of that my sister a aspiring pharmacy student said i shouldn't waste my time on a simple trade?  what is wrong with just being a nurse?

One nurse said he applied to Med school but couldn't go so unfortunately he had to do nursing; as if he need an excuse to explain why he's a nurse?  You got that from Hawthorne. I just got done watching Hawthorne and watching that show makes me feel empowered and inspired as a future nurse. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being just a nurse. Nurses JUST save lives, they JUST inspire people everyday, they Just change the world.  Nurses actually care about the patient. Nurses should not become a nurse for prestige or money in the first place. We a OH yea I'm not a nurse  but i can answer this because i am a future nurse. I have a strong passion for nursing. We should not use the words just a nurse. I take pride in nurses all over the world.

The answer to the idiots with their "diapers and bedpans" comments should always be:

"Oh, I guess you're thinking of nurse aides - or maybe what nurses did in the nineteenth century. Perhaps you should really do some research on modern healthcare before you comment on nursing duties"

Nice reply, I love it! So true....

There is NOTHING wrong with "just being a nurse" but if you limit yourself that way then that's all you'll "just be" Have pride in what you do and who you are escpecially after you know how hard you've worked to earn it.

People get mistaken so easily and remember if you rely on TV for an accurate portrayal of life then your really in trouble!

All of you remove the phrase"JUST a nurse"  everytime you repeat JUST it diminishes the profession.  You are a nurse= the 24 hour coordinator of bedside care for X number of patients.  You have legal and moral responsibility for the performance of their care.  You are versed in science, math, pharmacy, nutrition and ethics.  I say this about nurses- RN's because CNA and LPN don't have this level of education or responsibility.  They are care extenders for RN's.  Be proud of your accomplishments and education.

If people really knew what a nurse has to learn to become licensed, they would have a different opinion.  I'm just scratching the surface after only completing the 1st semester to become an RN, but I've gotten a good taste already.  When I began taking the prereq's I thought, "for God's sake, I'm not going to become a doctor.  Why do we have to go so deep?"  I have never minimized the significance of the nurse's role, but I have a new appreciation for how important they really are to the medical field.  When I was hospitalized about 5 years ago, I was so impressed with the care that I got from the nurses.  The doctors did what they do, but the nurses were the ones in the trenches, and seemed to be my life line.  I quickly realized that without them there wouldn't be any continuity; and as a patient I would be significantly more vulnerable.  God bless all nurses.
