My challenge has always been those darn NCLEX questions... I don't know about any of you but their is no clear cut answer when answering them. I find myself generally narrowing down to two answers and usually you have to read the darn question again to see if you can get the clue from the body of the question. What a nightmare....

The hardest thing I so far is having a clinical preceptor that believes that males don't belong in on the L&D floor, not unless you are the expecting father. She did not allow me to do any patient care exept for taking vitals. At least I know that when I go for my paramedic clinicals at L&D, I will have a just reason to ask for a different hospital.

Cultural sensitivity class. We had a man who had a sex change to be a woman, teaching us on how to look after maori patients. She then went on to tell us about her experience having a baby. It was quite unbelievable. The funny thing is, I've looked after this man/woman many times since I've graduated and we get on really well, she's a great laugh.
We then had to go to a Marae, which is a traditional maori village, where we had to spend the night. On our arrival at the marae on the friday morning we were greeted with a traditional marae greeting and exchange of gifts, which was great, but then we spent the next two hours being lectured to in maori. It would have been useful is at least one of us sixty five nurses spoke maori. Even the few maori women in our class didn't understand what was going on.
Thankfully, after those first few hours, they talked to us in English. Unfortunately, they didn't have many nice things to say. The maori elder told me that I, as a white man, have stolen his lands and I am responsible for keeping his people under the "white thumb of the oppressors".
What has this to do with nursing, well nothing really, but it was part of our training. It was meant to help us learn how to cope with people of other cultures.

Al,
Sorry you had such a lousy experience. We have one guy in our class and our clinical preceptor made sure he saw both a vaginal delivery and a C-section. Sometimes the experience is colored by the preceptor. Hopefully your next L&D experience will give you real experience.

Other nursing students. When I did my ADN, it was like being in high school again. They made it much more stressful then it needed to be.

What is the hardest thing????????????? deciding whether to do LPN or RN

1) I am considering LPN its a quicker program only 1 year. The lpn pay is a few bucks less than RN. And i hear that RNs have more responsibility than LPN. Im thinking LPN is the quickest and less headache route for me. Any suggestions from those who are RNs and LPNs?

2) I got excepted to a LPN school. I was told the school is not accredited. But it is approved by the board of nursing i called. since the school is not accredited would that effect my employment chances if i applied for jobs to work as a LPN?

3) I also was looking into Rue Education online RN program you take your pre-quistes online then get straight into a college RN program? anyone knows about that?

well I would have to say the hardest thing is what I am taking now. OB and Peds. The teacher is actually a writer for the state boards. so all her tests are super hard. I will be soo glad it's over with, I just hope it will pay off when it's time to take the boards.

I think that was just sexist and very unfair. I am terribly sorry that you had to go through with that. I wonder if there was a way that u could talk to the school dean about her actions. Who does she think she is anyway? I think as long as the patients didn't mind u being in there then it was all good. I mean how else are you going to learn unless you are exposed to it all? I wish u the best of luck in your future endeavors, and I hope u don't run into too many more sexist pigs like her.
