Ecstasy

Have you ever wondered why teens are walking around with pacifiers in their mouths?

Ecstasy is the preferred drug among teens

3.1% of eighth graders and 8.2% of twelfth graders have used ecstasy regularly.

Ecstasy was patented in 1914 as an appetite suppressant, but was never marketed.

In the 70’s and 80’s it was popular with psychotherapists. It enhanced trust, freeing patients from defensive anxiety and made them more emotionally open.

In 1988 it was classified as a Schedule I substance-a narcotic with a high potential for abuse and no acceptable medical use.

Possession, deliver, and manufacture can carry harsh penalties with fines up to $100,000 and prisons sentences of up to 99 years or life.
Street names: Adam, E, X, Clarity, Stacy, and Eve

Most common form: tablet or capsule

There have been several cases involving smoking as well as nasal and rectal routes of administration.
Cost: Wholesale: $8 to $10. Street: $10 to $40

Rarely consumed with ETOH because ETOH diminishes its effects.

Onset is usually experienced within 20 to 30 minutes of ingestion and can last up to 24 hours with the average trip lasting three to four hours.

Ecstasy has been called “lovers Speed” because of heightened sexual pleasure, however it may actually produce erectile dysfunction

Side Effects

In addition to promoting severe dehydration, the exhaustion can lead to hyperthermia which is the leading cause of death with Ecstasy.

Nausea
Hallucinations
Chills
Tremors
Muscle cramps
Jitteriness
Involuntary teeth clenching (this is what the pacifiers are for. Pay attention. Some things are far more than just a fad.)
Hypertension
MI
Stroke
Sudden death

Long-term Side Effects

Hypertension
Tachycardia
Depression
Paranoia
Anxiety
Hallucinations
Destruction of Brain Cells
Difficulty with memory may last up to two weeks after the most recent use.

May be very lethargic and suddenly become very violent.

Why would anyone eat steak or chocolate or ice cream?

Nope. an addiction is an addiction. Everyone needs to understand that so that they can see the patient's difficulty with stopping drugs or ETOH. Just think if someone told you you can never have chocolate as long as you live becuase it is going to destroy your liver, your heart, and your family. Not to mention you will lose your job and your house. No more chocolate for you young lady.

Cdnurse, Ecstasy is also called a date rape drug. Remember the girl in ARUBA. Teens use this drug, to date rape also, you mentioned in your discussion, that dehydration is one side affect, when, a person mix ecstasy in alcohol, and a person dies from a over dose, is the main cause of death is dehydration, because alcohol itself, dehydrates you. You said the ETHOH limits its affects, so the date raper has to add more ecstasy in a persons drinks, for it to work properly.

I am a proud mother of three beautyful daughter. I currently live in Los Angeles California. I've worked as a heathecare provider for almost 10 years. I am curently in school to pursue my MSN in nursing, and wants to work as a pediactric nurse, in public health.

cutie: the date rape drug that you are speaking of is Rohypnol (pronounced row-hip-nol) is a strong sedative which is similar to the drug Valium, but is 10 times stronger than Valium. Ecstasy is more of an amphetamine type drug (speed, cank). The ETOH has the opposite effect of ecstasy. Ecstasy has been used unknowningly for date sex. However, Ecstasy, as I mendtioned in my other post will often have the opposite effect causing erictile dysfunction in men.

why would anyone engage in ANY activity that is bad for their health? I think you hit it on the head...addiction is addiction. By the way, CD, kudos for not smoking....chantrix or no, it is an awesome feat. (One that I haven't quite gotten around to yet)

Numerous studies have confirm that drug abuse "runs" in families, and that such transmission is due in part to genetics. These findings have been tremendously important, and have set the stage for additional research to specify drug abuse phenotype(s) and gene-by-environment interactions inherent to complex disorders such as drug abuse.

I have a family history of drug abuse, alcohol abuse and nicotine abuse. I do not smoke, I do not do drugs. I do occasionally drink in moderation. Because I am aware of the family history of what my dad calls "addictive personality" I am very conscious of my habits.. People do not chose their future, they chose their habits, their habits often determine their future.

vickielee1970: I agree with you 100%-your last statement "People do not choose their future, they choose their habits, their habits often determine their future" is profound. My ex was an alcoholic (with addictive personality). My two children have fought a hard fight to overcome this (and the battle will continue as long as they live). But they can do this if they try hard enough and keep the desire. I'm afraid, as a nurse, that is one of my failures. I do not have sympathy for alcoholics and drug addicts. I realize this is a disease (addictive personality), but like vickielee1970, I believe it can be overcome, They do not have to travel down that path-they chose to. That's my 2 cents worth.

cd, thanks for the important information. I have three teens...we try to stay as involved in their lives as humanly possible as parents, but sometimes is not always enough...I have not heard of Ecstasy being a widely used drug here in this rural part of the state, but there are plenty of others that are very commonly used, and very readily available. All equally as dangerous, and addictive as the next. Quite scary when you think about it.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used up, worn out and screaming "Woo-hoo"!!!

vicky, al, and char: there are many studies out there about addictions and families. There are many studies that say running in families is bunk. Alcoholism is on both sides of my family. Both of my parents were alcoholics. My parents were two people who should have never had any children and they had eight of us. Only one had a problem with alcohol. ETOH killed both of my parents and my brother. Char, you are very honest but it sounds like you still may be judgmental. Yes, the addict and the alcoholic make choices but just stopping is not so easy. The problem with meth is very frightening. It is extremely addictive and so many Never get off of it. Given a choice, no one would choose to be homeless, look 40 years older than they are and have no family to care about them any longer. I love the ads with the young children saying when I grow up I want to be a drunk. Have you seen them? I do not care where you live, how remote of an area you are in, meth and E is there. Meth is particularly prevalent in rural areas because it can be cooked up without the odor being detected as quickly as it would be in the city. It is cheap and the ingredients can be bought at a feed store with no suspicions.

I hear what you are saying. And yes, here in my hometown and the surrounding cities, we have a huge problem with drugs of all types. But still, you have a choice. You still make that first decision to try it.

Talking to kids in grade school is not too early. That will help them with making choices to try or not to try.

I truely belive that parents who do ,do drugs and alcholie i know i spelled it wrong , can become addicted in some ways just as abuse, behavioral problems, i have 2 sons that are both heavy drinkers both smoke weed as they call it both are dealing with there habits. I did not drink nor did i take pills or smoke weed so there problems had to have come through there fathers side of the family not mine. But im sorry to say you can talk till your blue in the face there gonna do what they want to do counsling was a joke to them they didnt want to stop until they were ready and the more i got onto them the more they faught against me, so i accepted them as who they were because the counsler told me the more you argue demand the more there gonna do it so i backed off. Both a grown men one 26 and one 23 the 26 year old quit smoking and drinking the 23 year old quit smoking but now they say they are depressed they go to counciling but because my side of the family has depression its my fault. So they get rid of one addiction and end up with something else. So maybe our parents and there parents are why we have such drug liqure and depression so there probably wright. Hope i didnt make anybody mad last time i made an opponion i almost thought a war was gonna start, so please dont take anything i say personal please.

cdnurse: I did not mean to say that alcoholism was hereditary but addictive personality is. And that can led to alcoholism and drug addiction. If you know your family has a history of these things, then you should make better choices. You have freewill. You can choose to say no. My oldest son got mixed up with drugs in his teens and it continued until his late twenties. We went to family counseling and the counselor felt I wasn't understanding enough! No I wasn't. What he was doing was a conscious choice. He chose that path. And no-I don't understand it at all.

I am a recovering meth addict I have been clean four years this august, It is an everyday battle, I walked away from it with no rehab no drugs for the withdrawals and no family, i had pushed everyone away from me. Charlita you said you do not understand because he chose his path, true but in the same aspect you are not dealing with your son any longer you are dealing with the drug and if you do not understand the drug and what it can do then you will never understand. Meth is poison, it eats holes in your brain the size of oranges and you do not have to use very long. It causes paranoia and trust issues everyone is out to get you. You do not care about anyone or anything when you are using you just want the high. You will sell your soul for this drug.. The more that you harp on him about changing it the more you push him away and right into it, i am not saying to enable him but love him through it this is when tough love comes in. My parents would not let me come home until i got myself clean, I knew they loved me they didn't want to see me at 75lbs at 5'foot tall, I didn't want them to see me like that. I felt shame and embarrasment, once they do get clean don't focus on the negatives that will push them back things like you did this when.. big no nos... focus on positives one day of being clean is a step.. Four years clean and I still phene for it and want it just as much as i did four years ago.. I started when i was 15 and now i am 24 i was addicted for 5 years and walked away from it. You don't need to understand your son you need to understand the drug. As parents we need to be bluntly honest with our children when it comes to this poison, scare them straight and start early.. you could not imagine how easy it is to get this drug and how they prey on our children.. Like i said it is a choice you have to be loving but firm, in arms reach but not holding their hands, don't try to change them yourself they have to want to change... and with this drug they have to hit rock bottom at least three times... i was homeless, friendless, jobless, no education, no family, no car, no nothing!!!! i picked myself up and got back on my feet and now i am married with a three year old, i got my g.e.d. w/ a scholarship, i work for a mortgage broker as an assistant processor.. training to be a processor!!

It is a choice and I am living proof it is a choice and you can do it!!! don't stop pushing him and feel free to email me at k_nauman_04@yahoo.com

Thanks- good luck

The answer to the original question, why do they suck on pacifiers-----A side effect of Ectasy is grinding of the teeth. Sucking on a pacifier prevents this.

knauman1: yours is a truely wonderful story and I'm very happy for you-that you were able to break away from this addiction on your own says alot about your character. This was not the drug my son was using but I imagine the effects are just about the same. Thankfully, he is not on it anymore (I'm really hoping). I appreciate your viewpoint and it has made me understand alittle more. My son and I could never talk about this- I'd get angry-he'd get angry. And maybe I wasn't looking at things objectively. It hurt too much. I hope you continue to do well and are able to fight a good fight everyday. God bless you!

knauman: thanks for your brave posting. Best of luck to you. Please, everyone, know that it is an exception for someone to just walk away with no help, NA, or rehab. It is all about choices. However, if you are in deep, guess what the choice will be.

I agree with your point about addictive personality coming from Alcoholic parents and a brother that is forever relapsing ( yada, yada, yada ). I am actually the lucky one. However has anyone ever heard or know about addictive behavior skipping a generation? I had a friend that was an alcoholic and drug user whose parents did not touch the stuff. She grew up in the suburbs, went to a Catholic high school and came from a well structured family. Her parents weren't even divorced! I always wondered where she went wrong. I came to find out that her maternal grandmother was an alcoholic. Despite her parents raising her and her brother in an alcohol and drug free house, she ended up an alcoholic anyways. My theory is that her parents protected her too much. She never experienced her parents being inebriated. Maybe she didn't know bad alcohol and drug use could be. My husband and I don't really drink much. It makes me wonder how my own children will percieve alcohol and drugs. Will they truly understand the consequences of addiction? Has anyone ever known someone that was in the same situation that my former friend was?
